Effective Sales Management or Managing Sales Success, What Sounds Better?
Traditional sales days or methodologies used by the sales folks are over. No-not. These days a Salesman aka Business Development, client manager, account manager and a lot of similar names out there are the new ways the role has been masked and so-called improved, functionally and effectively. It makes sense to mask these roles as we couldn’t sell the same cookies in the same tin forever.
However, if we go deep and understand what the role value proposition is all about, the underlying surface is made of the same metal it was before, only the upper crust has changed. You sensed it right-Old wine in a new or a very new bottle. Organizations are creating a lot of KPI;s, Business Development processes, implementing tools and training etc .to upscale performance but why they still face the same challenge and what's the real reason the sales team isn't performing as expected or even under performing?
If we would randomly choose any salesperson from a standard to even a highly classed or renowned organization, we bet he is not aware of two words in more detail-Emotional Selling. What does it mean? How do I sell with this? I never heard of this and more will come out, naturally. He has never been made aware of what this means or what value this brings in overall. The reason, he is focused only on selling and wants to push his scores higher before even winning the reward. He is looking at numbers and nothing else. So doesn’t this make us think that we are still brewing legacy. If yes, so why mask it with fancies?
Bringing in Emotional Intelligence and empowering the salespeople to be equipped and eventually using that armor is what makes the entire equation more than algebraic. We are not talking about a training classroom or a video nugget, we are emphasizing a lifeycle of learning using the power of EQ and a lot more that it brings in with it. If we had to take a few examples, we would ask like this:-
• What levels of soft skills and empathy does a salesperson bring in before he talks about selling?
• How often do salespeople look negatives and criticism as a success factor for improvement and what makes them smarter to churn that to positives?
• What level of social, cultural and emotional aspects do you bring in before you focus on selling?
• Finally how well do you know what are you selling and to whom are you selling?
• And the list is known ending..
