Is the content in TLS appropriate reading for a 17 year old student? I'm hoping to apply to Oxford for English next year and thought subscribing to TLS might be a good way to introduce myself to some criticism etc, but was wondering if it might be too complicated?

Absolutely! It’s not inappropriate at all – you might find certain articles a bit esoteric (hell, even I don’t understand the subjects of half of the articles I proof-read) but the pieces are written for an intelligent general audience. Would be excellent preparation for university.

Can you recommend the best things to read/ websites to visit to find new poetry?

I don’t really use one source. It’s more a cultivated feed that requires multiple services/scripts to narrow it down into one service so it doesn’t drive me mad.

One easy thing to do is create a list on Twitter and add literary magazines/journals you like, then another list for poets you like, etc.

Here is a recipe you can use for a filtered/manageable list:

list:lifeinpoetry/lit-journals-media-orgs filter:links exclude:retweets

and then save the search. You’d need to replace ‘list:lifeinpoetry/lit-journals-media-orgs’ with one of the lists you want to create a search/Twitter feed of.

Be warned I don’t fully know the profiles of each one so sometimes add blindly, and remove later. :P
