“Um. Why do you need pads? Is Hazel coming over or something?” Will asks, and he’s got that tone that means that he’s confused, and Nico’s brain shuts down. There’s no way he forgot to tell Will. There’s no way. He and Hazel are always talking about Nico’s transition and his childhood, and there’s no way that he forgot to tell Will that he's trans.

Nico hated the feeling of his binder on his chest, the texture and the cloth was torturing him. Especially cus it was summer, the hot air was everywhere even in his cabin.

But on the other hand there is NO WAY he was taking that off, the dysphoria is way too much and he couldn’t stand even more people looking at him. So Nico had the biggest conflict of the times in his hands, and he didn’t seem like he was about to make a decision.

Instead he stayed there, curled up on his cabin’s floor, “no one would notice if I stayed here all day…” he thought to himself. But his body made no effort to get up, and change out of his binder. It was silly but Nico couldn’t think what would be worst to handle, the dysphoria or the horrible overstimulation from the texture.

“Nico?” He hears his bf’s voice form the outside of the cabin, yet he made no attempt to get up. “Neeks I know you’re in there,” the voice said, now standing at his front door. Nico hear some shuffling along with noises that sounded as if someone was picking his lock, “great,” he thought.

The door opens and there stood the shadow of none other than Will Solance, “there you are,” he said, seemingly proud of himself for opening the door. “Come on death breath you can’t lay there all day,” will exclaimed, but in Nico’s opinion that sounded like a great plan, “yes I can,” Nico said, then turned his body to look away from the door.

Will walked into the cabin, closing the door behind him. He sat down next to Nico, “are you having a bad day?” Will asked, he seemed very genuinely about it. Nico just nods his head, not really in the mood to talk to anyone. “Come here,” his bf told him, gently sweeping him off the cold floor and onto his lap.

“Do you want to talk about it?” That question seemed inevitable, Nico knew it was coming, but he didn’t know what to say. It’s not like his problem would be taken seriously by many people, Will is different though, he cares an awful lot. “I don’t like the feeling of the binder right now,” Nico explained. “Cant you take it off then?” To that Nico just shook his head, and Will seemed to get the message.

Will paused for a moment, before walking out of the cabin. Leaving a very VERY confused Nico behind, what was that even about? But not too long after Will had returned, Nico wasn’t sure why he’d ever think he wouldn’t. “I got you my hoodie, they’re like a whole size bigger than yours,” he explained. And that simple action made Nico’s whole day, in ways Will couldn’t even imagine.

Nico needs to get something off his chest (pun intended) and it goes better than he expected.

His secret gnawed at the back of his mind, like a termite slowly chipping away at the wood of a house.

It wasn’t that he was ashamed of his secret, no, quite the contrary! He would barely even call it a secret, anyways!

He was just…

Just. There was that word again. The word that always needed his thoughts when he tried to find a way to tell Thomas, the word that always ended with an ellipsis, those three little dots piling up in his brain until all he could hear was the echoing of “just…”

Just do it.

Just say what he needed to.

Just tell him!

It was only their third real date (fourth, if you count meeting in the food court of the mall. So three and half dates, maybe.) so it would be early enough that it wouldn’t feel like Nico had been hiding it and just early enough that Nico would feel that miserable if Thomas responded… less than kindly. Okay, that last bit was a lie. But either way he’d probably write a new song about it.

Nico took a deep breath. “Thomas?”

There was still time to change his mind, he could talk about something else, anything else than coming out-

Thomas looked up from his food- a cheeseburger, nothing fancy, as they had decided to get food as a local burger joint which proudly proclaimed they had the best burgers in all of Florida. Usually, Nico was inclined to believe them, but now the food sat heavy in his stomach that aches with nerves.

“I need to tell you something.”

No backing out now. Nico saw Thomas’s eyebrows furrow.

“I’m a transgender guy. I understand if this changes anything about our relationship, but I hope it won’t-“

“Oh. Okay. What pronouns do you use?”

Nico paused. He has been prepared for the worst, prepared to have to give a whole speech about what being trans was, prepared to have to walk out of the restaurant…

He had not been prepared to be asked his pronouns.

He stuttered for a moment. “I- I use he/him and they/them.”

“Okay. Should I switch it up?”

“Uh- yeah, that’d- thank you.”

“Of course. Thank you for trusting me with this information, and it will not change anything about our relationship. I don’t care what your body looks like, I just care that you’re happy! I like you because you’re you, Nico.”

Oh, he was not about to cry in the middle of a hole-in-the-wall burger joint.

God, he really had scored a jackpot, meeting Thomas, hadn’t he?

“You’re so… I don’t know what to say. Thank you.”

“Hey, yeah, it’s only right that I respect you and your identity. And if anyone treats you less than you deserve, I will physically fight them! Okay, maybe not, but… you get it. I care about you, and your gender doesn’t change that.”

Nico gave a small, almost silent laugh and shook his head. “You’re incredible.”

“Gosh, I hope you really think that, because, well, I was wondering if you’d like to… well, make it official? I mean, would you like to be my boyfriend? Or partner, or whichever term you prefer?”

Nico flushed. “Yeah. Yeah, I’d like that.”

The two finished their dinner and Thomas drove Nico back to his apartment building where he had been picked up.Thomas pulled into a parking space and looked over at Nico.

“I had fun tonight,” Thomas smiled.

“I did, too. I like being around you.” Nico put his hand up to open the car door, but hesitated and turned back to Thomas. “Can I… can I kiss you?”

Thomas smiled and gave a small nod, leaning forward over the center console. Their lips touched hesitantly, then broke apart and both began to giggle like high school kids having their first awkward kiss.

“Can I see you tomorrow?” Thomas asked, still grinning.

“I think so. I have a lunch break at noon, want to meet then?”

“That’d be great.”

“Seen you then. Goodnight, Mister Sanders.”

“Goodnight, Mister Flores.”

When Nico got back to his apartment, he lay sprawled on his bed with a smile on his face. It felt… good. It felt good to get coming out off his chest (ha laughed a little bit out loud at this thought. He could never resist making a joke like that), and it felt even better to know that Thomas really wouldn't be going anywhere.

Take that, anxiety, Nico thought as he closed his eyes to go to sleep.
