It might be kinda long and I am so sorry but I am begging anyone who sees this to read it. If you are a teen please please read this.
Especially if you are queer, transgender, or of minority descent.
I know you already know how scary its getting, I'm not going to spend any more time reminding you. This century is unique. It is unique because there are now aspects at play that never have been before. The internet and AI are singularities. The struggles you and your siblings experience are new. They are unique.
We have survived terrible things, we will always endure because an identity that is ancient cannot be destroyed. But we have never dealt with AI or the internet or this level of hyper surveillance. Ever.
I can't express how deeply I want kids of today to know that they are growing up in a world that is just as unknown and strange and confusing to them as it is to their parents. Despite what the elder queers will tell you, we are not prepared. We don't know. We tell you that we've been through hell and we can get through it again and that is true. We say that because we don't want to collapse under fear.
But I need you to recognize how and why your fight is different. It will always be the same underlying story, but the actors and circumstances are unique here.
You live in a techno fascist dystopia. That is literally the reality. You have to start moving like you are.
So holy shit what do we do?
This is the part everybody reads and nods and agrees but doesn't actually commit to. I know it is hard, I am telling you now that your illusion of choice is fading. It is hard and inconvenient, and you have no choice. I know you're only 15 or you literally just graduated. I know you have no money, I know you have no clue where to start.
I'm going to start very small and by the end of this rant you might think I'm being a bit extreme. But please bear with me.
1. Delete your face off of social media. Yes, every instance you can find of your face, if possible, wipe it. If you can get your relatives to remove images of you, attempt that. If they ask why, explain that there have been mass cases of predators stealing images of children and women to produce illegal and explicit content. You are personally concerned about this interfering with job or school opportunities. Tell them that there have been mass reports online of parents being scammed out of thousands of dollars from scammers impersonating family. Create private whatsapp chats or closed groups to share family photos or videos with friends.
If you are a creative or public figure, I know that's a very hard ask. Get creative, create a persona, cleverly edit photos of yourself to obscure your face. We can't do everything. Podcasters can have their voices ripped by ai, artists can have their personas stolen. We're trying to do harm reduction. If you can afford to stay anonymous, please do so. Return to the days of old school internet safety. Never share your full name, location or affiliates. Never expose your or a friend's school or place of employment.
2. Create secret passwords with family and close friends.
Your mom, your grandpa. Any person who may not be able to realize they're speaking to an ai. The special word is something absurd. "Pineapple, Terracotta Pie, Chainsaw." If your mother receives a frantic text or call from "you" saying you've been kidnapped and need $5000, your mom can say "oh no! Whats the password??" And avoid a lot of grief.
3. Physical Media. Everything.
Listen to me. We are currently experiencing an information dark age that is being made exponentially worse by AI. We stopped writing and printing things. Everything is online. That is terrifying.
Stop streaming movies legally. I can't tell you to pirate movies online so. I'm definitely not saying you should do that. All I'll say is that if buying is not owning piracy is not theft.
Start buying your favourite shows on dvd. Buy dvd and vhs movies that you can watch without internet. It is a great old school poverty trick for when the wifi bill goes unpaid, but it also decreases your reliance on corporations. Start a movie collection. Start a cd collection, buy cassettes. Buy remote devices that don't require wifi to operate.
3. BOOKS. GET SO MANY BOOKS.
Like I said, information dark age. Get the user manual for your car (more on that later). Please for the love of fucking God I am begging you to buy books on foraging in your environment. Books on gardening, books on first aid, books on simple circuits and electricity, books that talk about different water purification methods. Books on navigation, sailing, yes, seriously, sailing and hunting. Books on HISTORY, PLEASE, buy many different books on documented history from many different perspectives. Keep collections, share these collections with your friends and family. Have a personal and communal library.
4. Learn how to sew and start recycling fabric.
Learn how to make clothes guys. Not only is it punk as fuck, it is literally more sustainable in every single way. Learn how to patch your pants so you don't have to buy new ones. Learn how turn clothes that are too small into something you can wear. Learn how to make binders. Develop a personal style that is unique so that you are not reliant on brands. Be resourceful and creative. Share with others.
5. Use older materials in general including clothes.
When they say "they don't make em like they used to" that is extremely literal. We literally no longer have the alloys to make certain steel products anymore, the antiques are the best there is. Older clothes used to be made with higher percentage real wool which is infinitely more durable than polyester bullshit. The fact that your great granddad's Carhart jacket or Levi's jeans are still solid as fuck is because things used to genuinely be made to last. It will always be more economical and environmentally friendly to value longevity. You may want to avoid real leather and get cheap pleather. But a well made leather jacket can keep generations warm. A good cast iron pan is infinitely better than a teflon one. Seek out real materials, real wood, metals and cotton. Anything that has survived 50+ years without a scratch is a better choice than something produced yesterday.
6. THRIFT. FACEBOOK MARKETPLACE. MARKETS. HAGGLE! BARTER AND TRADE.
Please. Barter and trade. Buy anything you can buy second hand. That is the true market place where commerce benefits people and not corporations. TRADE stuff. I have something you want; you have what I want. BARTER. People NEED to remember how to barter. Learn how to get deals. Learn what the markets are for things, learn how to find the value of vintage items. Value artisans and creatives. Buy fun trinkets and things from art markets instead of Amazon.
7. Make irl trans friend groups and meet in person often.
We have to get off the internet. At this point it is dangerous to be trans online. You have to know trans people in real life. You have to see them in real life often. You have to check in on them.
8. Live with Trans people
You can't afford a house anyways. Queer group housing is statistically far safer for trans individuals. Buy a plot of land with your trans friends and let your other trans friends pitch tents there. I am so serious. Allow any queer people you know a couch whenever they need one. Start a communal bonfire. Make sure they are fun.
9. Stockpile gender gear and supplies.
Learn diy. Don't talk about it online. If ever possible try to allocate as many resources as you can. Worn binders, extra hormones, etc. Keep these things in a place where multiple trans people can access them. Share the locations of these things only with trusted people in your group. Keep condoms, birth control and abortifacients handy.
10. Don't get a Credit Card. Don't take out a Loan.
11. Invest in used classic cars. Never buy a dealership car. Never buy a new car. Never buy a car with a computer in it.
My crew exclusively owns classic cars. Why? You can actually fucking work on them yourself. Carb engines are typically beautifully simple. Parts are cheaper than anything you could ever find on a 2020. No computers, no dealership involvement. Classic insurance is also generally cheaper. The EV industry has been trying to push the narrative that because classics use gas, they are worse for the environment. But a 65 year old beauty is exponentially less harmful than a 2020 that is designed to fail in 5 years, and will be replaced in 10. The mass production of these shit boxes is far worse for the environment than a family loving and maintaining a 60 year old car for generations. Cars used to be a work of art, something meant to be kept for decades, ideally, forever. Now car ads boast that 5 years is an achievement.
Find your car, learn how to maintain that car, and stick with it. Buy the manual, learn its specs, and you will be okay. You can find many guys selling classics on Facebook for $2-7 grand a lot of the time. Way way cheaper than any new car by a lot. No, there is no warranty, but that also means you can paint and customize your car however you want. You're not leasing it, it's yours. If it explodes, you're maybe down $4000, you can sell the body to recover losses because classics appreciate. If you buy a 2020 for $20,000 and it shits the bed, you're fucked. You are not selling that thing for anywhere near what you spent.
Can't be tracked, can be serviced mostly yourself, can be passed down through generations. One trans person in that group home has to know how to drive lol. I am MAJORLY dumbing this down. I will post more about this in the future.
Those white moms are genuinely onto something guys. Not in the "gmos are bad" health nut way, just in the "knowing what tf is in your food way". Start small. Grow carrots. Cool, now you don't have to buy carrots. Buy produce from farmers markets, it's always better anyways. Slowly reduce your reliance on big grocery.
13. If possible, keep traveling.
If your commune- I mean, uh- queer group housing situation, is at all capable of staying mobile, please do that. This things can truly only get so large and stay in one place for so long before the FBI comes knocking. Plausible deniability is your friend. 5 people traveling in a van is very normal. 5 groups of 5 people traveling in trucks and vans is.... suspicious... but not if they don't all claim to know each other. Not if they plan routes and destinations affectively. Picking up odd cash jobs in each town, labour, moving furniture, etc will keep you liquid. Create new connections in each town, familiarize yourself with the homeless population. Have conversations. Offer help. Leave and return. Become a tribe nomads.
14. Learn about drugs and harm reduction.
People use drugs. Learn how to keep them safe. Learn how to prevent an OD before paramedics have to be called. Never call the police on a user, always try to get help without police involvement whenever possible. Study the affects of Fentanyl. Learn how to administer Meloxicam.
15. Learn how to create a barricade. Learn how to diffuse tear gas. If you're attending a protest or rally, cover your face, start masking again. Leaf blowers are an excellent defence against tear gas. Remember that tear gas is a powder, not a gas.
16. Never speak to police.
You have the right to remain silent. You would like a lawyer present. They need a warrant to enter your home. No further questions. If you have not been told you are being detained, you are free to leave. If you have been told you are being detained, remain calm and silent. Any and all response can be construed as resisting arrest. Remain silent.
18. Document and remember the names and faces of the law enforcement officers that work in your community.
The executive branch isn't some vague unknowable entity. These are real people who live alongside you. They have addresses.
19. Monitor court houses and offer assistance to people facing charges.
That homeless man who got a ticket for loitering probably isn't going to make it to his court date because he doesn't understand English very well. That will lead to a warrant for his arrest. And that single mom of 3 just needs someone to watch her youngest for like, 20 minutes while she deals with this. You can change someone's life.
20. Bare witness to police action
You do not have to interfere. Many times that makes things more complicated. Stand back, record. Watch. Don't stop watching until police leave. If you do speak to them, all you want is name and badge number. Say nothing else.
21. Arm yourself. Learn legitimate self defence techniques and carry self defensive weapons. A wallet chain is surprisingly affective. Always tell at least one person where you are going and when you should be back. Always check in on your femme friends going out, if you came as a group you leave as a group.
22. Babysit. Carpool. Help out single parents. Help out queer and neurodiverse folks who can't drive. Create a gas fund and have each household member contribute. Do the same for all communal expenses.
23. Be nice to animals and help nature out.
Plant native species, do it radically. Protect the local family of deer. Say hello to them. Talk to crows. Feed stray cats. Plan a day for you and the squad to clean up the park down the street. Choose a new location to tidy up often. Make a day out of it. Don't trim your lawn if you can get away with it.
24. Visit reservations where permitted.
Talk to them. Buy goods from them. Offer them resources in return. Form a friendship.
Be a fucking kid, man. Really. Go to the park. Go run around outside with your friends. Throw a little party. Hug your friends. Laugh loudly and often. This is the most valuable thing you have. The world is in fact, burning. During periods of crisis, it has always been so important that we continue to dance, sing songs, party together. That's where bonds are made. That's where we collectively remember that all is not lost.
26. Continue finding yourself.
Keep inventing new words and identities and ideas. Be confusing. Be hard to define. Use the labels that make you feel seen and disregard the rest. Be weird, be queer, be an animal. Resist, and never conform.
I am terrified for you. But I have so much faith in you.
