Singles Magazine May 2019 issue - Interview with Suho
We filmed all day long going around all the corners of Paris.
“Now that I think about it, it’s been a while since I roamed the streets freely like this. I usually like holidays where a lot of walking is required, but it is my first time in Paris. It was nice to be able to experience the feel of Paris (from) up-close because of the shoot. The weather was nice too. I think Paris definitely is an artistic city.”
What is the thing you want to try the most while you’re in Paris?
“I went to The Louvre yesterday, which was right next to our hotel. There are a lot of art exhibitions I’ve been wanting to see so I plan to visit the museums in Paris, like Musée d’Orsay and Musée National Picasso-Paris, in my spare time. Recently, I’m hooked onto Van Gogh so I plan to visit Auvers-sur-Oise, where he stayed before he passed on. I’m really looking forward to it. It’s an area on the outskirts of Paris, and it takes an hour and a half to get there by train.”
Which of Gogh’s charms moved your heart?
“I wasn’t interested in art before, but I completely fell in love after seeing Van Gogh’s self-portrait in a museum I visited in Switzerland while I was there two years ago for a pictorial shoot. It was my first time properly seeing a painting so close that I could see the brushstrokes. There are many self-portraits that Van Gogh drew, but it was impressive that each piece expressed him differently. I was surprised each painting held so many emotions that you can guess Gogh’s psychological state even as years pass.”
What if you drew your own self-portrait, just like Gogh?
“I can’t draw well, but if I had to, I would want to draw myself in just a peaceful state.”
There are many people who recognise you even in Paris. We’re curious about how it feels living as a K-Pop start who people all around the world pay attention to.
“Sometimes I’m amazed myself. Our languages and countries are different, so how did they discover our music and become our fans? I think it’s probably because many seniors starting from DBSK and Super Junior hyungs have paved the way for K-Pop fandoms in particular to rapidly form in Europe and South America. I hope K-Pop music receives a lot more love in the future.”
It is not unimaginable for you to roam the streets freely in Seoul like you did today? How do you balance the different between EXO’s Suho and Kim Junmyeon the individual?
“There’s no difference between the two. I put in effort so that differences won’t form, and I think I’ve been able to maintain the balance because of my good friends around me. I often meet with the alumnus of K-ARTS Acting Department’s class of ‘09. I dropped out after attending for only a year, but we consistently keep in contact. Although there are friends who stopped acting halfway, most of them are still acting so we also practise acting when we meet. All of them easily treat me as Kim Junmyeon the individual. All we do when I meet my friends are watch movies, exercise, and have a light glass of wine while we talk, but I receive a lot of help from those gatherings.”
It’s been seven years since EXO debuted. You’re leading the team as one of the eldest hyungs. What thoughts come to mind when you look back on the time spent together with the members?
“I wonder if seven years have really passed. Time is really fast. Recently, all the members are busy with their own things so it’s difficult to gather together, but our hearts are always close to one another. I want to show a good image in the future too while promoting through EXO’s name for a long, long time.”
Chen’s single ‘Beautiful Goodbye’ is receiving positive reactions recently. Do you not have plans for a solo album?
“I’ve been working on songs in my spare time. It would be nice if it could happen as soon as possible, but I don’t want to rush it. I want to be a singer-songwriter who can relay my stories in my music, so I’m slowly preparing it step by step.”
You’re acting too. You’ve been constantly showing new sides through various genres like dramas, movies, and musicals. Your serious attitude towards acting that’s as good as your attitude towards music stands out.
“Acting is interesting because it’s a genre where you experience another’s life and express it. It’s fun to try be someone who’s not me. So I try to empty and hollow myself out whenever I’m acting. It’s more exciting especially for musicals because we act together with music. I haven’t done a lot of projects, but it’s thrilling to be able to directly meet the audience up-close and feel the harmony. I can also immediately feel the audience liking it on the days I’m satisfied with myself. Whether it’s music or acting, or anything else, I think you’ll receive sincere reactions when you do them sincerely.”
Is there a genre or role you want to try as an actor?
“There’s nothing in particular, but I want to try something that’s different from the images of the few characters I’ve played until now. Actually, instead of what roles I act, I learn a lot of things I didn’t know about the acting process itself in front of the camera, even if it’s a small role. There are good seniors around me so they tell me a lot of nice things. So it’s enjoyable and fun.”
Your stage name Suho has the meaning of ‘to protect’. What is the most precious thing in life that Suho wants to protect the most?
“Innocence, purity, dreams. All of them have something in common. I think it’s important to not change and protect the dream that I’ve been purely dreaming about since I was younger. Although it is definitely possible for dreams to change a little as we live, I think it’s most important to not lose the heart that was earnestly wishing for that dream.”
Do you have a new dream for the future?
“I want to be someone who provides a positive influence to those around me and sets an example. I think it’s a good thing to become a precedent. Even if I’m not the first, I hope to be someone who can be an example to someone as a senior, as a hyung. I want to be someone whom one can look at and say, ‘Ah, I want to be like that person,’ while making them want to dream. But I’m not at that age yet (laughs).”
Your birthday is coming. How do you plan to spend your 29th birthday?
“I was filming my drama last year. There’s a high chance that I’ll probably be working this year too (laughs). If I don’t have anything scheduled, I think I’ll probably simply have a drink with my friends at a tented street stall (pojangmacha).”
The prime of youth, the most beautiful time in life, is passing. How do you want to spend the last chapter of your 20′s, facing your 30′s now?
“I’m not the type to think too much of age, so I don’t have plans for something that I definitely must do. Age is just a number, so it’s not important. I think what’s more important is how we think and what kind of mindset we live with. I want to be someone who maintains my heart from pure times even when I become 30, 40. Instead of thinking and worrying about the days that are coming, I want to focus on now, this moment, the present.”
That’s a good thought. When you end your holiday in Paris, who would you write a letter for if you had to?
“Ah, I didn’t know you’d ask this question but I’ve really planned to write a letter for the EXO members. April 8 is EXO’s 7th debut anniversary, and I plan to buy writing paper with a drawing of the Eiffel Tower on it and write a letter since I’ll be in Paris then. It again feels new that I’m thinking of the members after coming so far. I plan to sincerely write everything I’ve wanted to say to each member. I hope they become good memories ❤”
GRAZIA Magazine April 2019 issue - Interview with Suho
The photoshoot started in the afternoon. What did you do before getting to the venue?
“Because I got up too early, I went to play basketball, had lunch, and even went to an oriental clinic, which was quite diligent of me.“
Then the swelling [T/N: that you’d have after waking up in the morning] must have disappeared by now? (laugh)
“I’ve been starting a new diet that matches my body. I usually would eat meat but they said it wasn’t right for my type of body [T/N: probably metabolism]. They said that I should plan my diet primarily based on seafood and white rice now. I’ve been eating carbs, which I wouldn’t usually eat before, so my body is a bit swollen.”
In one of your previous interviews, you said that one of your mottos is to ‘be present at the moment’. What side of yourself do you want to present in today’s interview?
“I need to be present at the moment but I probably worked out too hard in the morning, my eyes can’t be all shiny now (laugh). But fortunately I think my current state matches the concept of today’s photoshoot too, so I guess it did my body some good relaxing.”
You recently attended Bvlgari’s B.zero1 20th anniversary event in Rome as Korea’s representative.
“It doesn’t happen everyday that you are invited to an overseas event. So it was an experience full of amazement and fun for me. It was also the first time I ever went to Italy so I took the opportunity to enjoy Rome to the fullest before coming back (laugh).”
You’re also known as one of the humorous members within your team. I feel like I know what that means now.
“I haven’t even started though? I’m talking in all seriousness right now (laugh).”
Do you normally wear jewelry too?
“I have great interest in fashion, but I wasn’t that acquainted with jewelry. There was one time when I accidentally had a scratch on my neck during a dance session, so I became more careful after that. But then thanks to this event, I got to wear rings and necklace(s), and they seemed to look nice on me. Hahaha.”
Yeah I watched that live broadcast where you showed your ring too (laugh).
“It kinda matched the look that I went for that day so I wanted to brag a little bit.”
You did some travelling with your friend after finishing the schedule, normally it’s not easy for you to travel around, is it?
“I do travel once in a while. I’ve been planning my vacations ever since the 4th year after my debut. I personally love travelling, so I took the time to form a group with my friends and travel every year. But still, this was the first proper Europe trip with a friend.”
Not only Rome, you took your time to travel every corner of Venice too. What’s your travelling type?
“I wasn’t the type who would plan my itinerary so thoroughly in the past. That resulted in me belatedly knowing that the place I just came back from was a very famous place, or there was a good restaurant near my hotel that I passed by without knowing. It was kinda upsetting and such a pity. [Because] when would I ever get the chance to visit that city again. It’s really true that you only feel and see as much as you know. That was when I started to plan my travels and do my research diligently before going somewhere.”
Where was the most memorable place from this trip?
“My favorite spot was Colosseum. We unintentionally went there 3 times, but if it makes you go ‘Wow~’ looking from the outside, once you get inside, it gives you this unexplainable vibe. I didn’t have my expectations high but once I was inside, the scenes from the movies ‘Ben Hur’, ‘Gladiator’, the American series ‘Spartacus’ came to mind one by one and matched with what I saw, so it was a very interesting experience. It felt so incredible, the fact that thousands of people from the B.C. times would come to this huge building, sit here and cheer as they watched the matches.”
What’s your next destination?
“I’m thinking Paris. I’ve been there once but I just travelled around without a guide, so it’s a shame that I couldn’t feel much. This time I plan to go on a guided tour and also visit the nearby city where Van Gogh, my favorite artist, used to live before he passed away. And to view his artworks too.”
You put ‘Su-hwak-haeng’ in your instagram profile. What’s your trivial happiness these days? [T/N: su-hwak-haeng is a wordplay with so-hwak-haeng, which stands for ‘the guaranteed happiness that comes from small/trivial things’]
“I think I just feel happy after having a day a little well-spent. When I lie on my bed before sleep, watching Netflix, after spending time well. That really is the moment of happiness, isn’t it? (laugh)”
What’s Suho’s typical well-spent day like?
“I do a lot of sports, including fitness. Also for my lyrics composing, whenever I come up with something, I write it down. I meet my friends, we watch movies and share our stories, too. Or if there’s someone in the group with an audition coming up, we would help him with script reading too.”
Throughout the interview, I kept thinking that you reminded me of someone, then I realized that your voice or your vibe really resembles your close friend, Byun Yohan’s. Do you grow to be alike as much as you are close?
“My brother said the same thing too… A few people said something similar too. Is it because I do script readings with him frequently (laugh)? But as you get to know us, we always have big differences.”
Is there something you’re into these days?
“These days it’s basketball. My goal is to work hard and level up.”
What’s at the center of Suho’s life at the moment? Have you ever thought about that?
“I have my personal ambition regarding acting so I’ve been participating in musical and movie works, but the fact that I’m EXO’s Suho before anything else doesn’t change. Also during this Italy trip, I got recognized by many people, I think it was because I’m EXO Suho, and the invitation that I got to attend an event overseas was also thanks to my EXO title. That’s why it’s only natural that I always keep EXO at my center.”
We all know that you call yourself the funniest member in EXO. How would you define your gag code?
“Our fans call it the ‘gag pristine area’. That it’s the kind of gag where I don’t devalue and hurt any certain person, but only make fun of myself. I personally think it’s such a innocently funny thing. In itself, it’s a kind of heavens-helped gag (laugh).”
Do you know that the very fact that you are explaining it right now is funny too?
“Sometimes there are people like that too. They say that whatever I do is just funny. When we did the photoshoot sometime ago too, it seems I was quite interesting. The photographer said that I was interesting even when I just stood still.”
Aren’t you proud of yourself at times like that?
“Of course I’m happy (laugh).”
Who has the best understanding of this gag dimension of yours?
“Sehunnie really likes it. Our codes really match well.”
Then who’s the most incompatible member?
“I think it’s Chanyeol. Chen used to not match either but now he’s come to understand my code (laugh). But Chanyeolie seems to never get it.”
I think it’s not an overstatement to say that the relationships among EXO members now are like a family. When are the times when you are reminded oh so well that ‘As expected, we are one team’?
“Recently we got the chance to gather all the members after 2 weeks. It was such a happy and interesting time. Of course we ended up playing games that time too, and I don’t know why but I ended up last place.”
Was it because the members kept tackling you?
“I think eventually it’s because I take it well. And my reaction is good too. You know there are also people who pull a stern face and hate it when you joke around. But as for me, I don’t act like that as long as it doesn’t go too far. I think they tend to especially act that way even more because they want to see my reaction.”
Don’t you ever think ‘I want to get down from the leader position now’?
"I don’t know if it’s because of the years we’ve been working, but now be it the members or the company, they always come to discuss with me first. But these days I’ve been thinking, that even if I weren’t the leader, they would’ve done the same. It’s tiring at times, but at the same time it’s rewarding too, that ‘So I’ve lived a good life.’ I don’t think the situation would change much even if I were to retreat from the leader position now.”
If there’s something you wish from the members as the leader?
“We play games a lot, but I wish they started to learn how to lose now. You know people say losing is actually winning. To be honest, there were many times when I intentionally lost. More than feeling happy from winning in a game, I would hate it more to see the members who have strong desire for winning being upset from losing. Rather than ‘I need to win even if I have to die’, it feels more at ease to just let others win (laugh).”
I guess it’s the leader’s consideration.
“I think it’s just my personality. I’ve been like that ever since I was small. Even when we played games where we bet a jjajjangmyeon, my friends would fight and end up injuring themselves. So I never joined (such games).”
Who’s the EXO member with a particularly strong desire for winning?
“It’s Chanyeol (laugh). As for me and Kyungsoo, we have no desire to win, nor are we interested. Anyways, my hope is that they would learn the happiness when you lose intentionally for others’ sake. Haha.”
Just 1 year after you challenged yourself in the musical field with <The Last Kiss> in 2017, you ascended to starring in <The Man who Laughs>. You even won yourself many newcomer awards. It must mean that you got your recognition now, right?
“I think to some people, I’m forever an acting idol who came from an idol group. That’s all the more reason I feel thankful being awarded. Because it means that I got recognized a little as a musical actor. I know very well that with every award comes the responsibility and pressure, so I need to work even harder in the future. Because I’m a new actor who just starts now.”
You’d hinted a few times that you wanted to work with seniors. Now that it finally came true, what did you learn from them personally?
“I’ve learned so many things. Jung Sunah nuna especially pointed things out and helped me meticulously. She would make precise comments like ‘You were slower than the beat in here’. Even in the middle of the actual show too (laugh). I learned a lot from observing how the seniors did it, and all the process of working together with them became such great energy to me. I was able to learn from watching carefully every move of Park Hyoshin hyung as he did it. Haha. I think I worked hard to try to catch up through that process of watching them for reference, then reinterpreting it in my own way.”
2018 was a year that you worked hard not only in EXO’s activities but also as an individual. What kind of plan do you have for this year?
“So far there’s no exactly finalized plan. It’s just that I really want to work on a movie or a drama, and a musical is a good idea too. EXO also has plans to show various sides of us.”
If you could choose, what kind of face would you want to meet the viewers with?
“I don’t particularly look for a certain character. But I do hope that it’s not one that is too stiff. I want to act someone who’s flexible, mischievious, and shows their emotions well. But I don’t want it to be another cool character again. Because it’s kinda burdensome. Haha.”
What’s the picture that Suho’s visualizing for the future to come?
“I want to become someone of positive influence, who sets a precedent. So that I can become a senior who starts and paves the way for my junior colleagues, and is of help to them. For instance I can be of positive influence to my fans or others just by donating or founding a volunteer organization. Also, if in the past, when you say you want to be awarded at Cannes or the Oscars, it would be common for people to tell you to ‘stop dreaming’, but now, that thought is gradually becoming something realizable, not a dream without any hope. I believe that someday a Korean will make it. And the junior actors who see that will be able to dream bigger dreams.”
LEON Magazine January 2019 issue - Interview with Suho
You spent time with us at LEON 2019’s Young LEON. You are running on the highway of the peak of youth (young) now, what is ‘youth (young)’ to you?
“I think you can link it to the word ‘youth’. I think anyone can be a youth if they have dreams, if they have the will to fulfil their goals after setting them. Those kinds of people show a passionate and active image to continuously develop themselves, regardless of whether they are thirty or forty. They also have an enthusiastic attitude towards life. I always have dreams, too. They’re not very grand just because they’re called dreams. To fulfil my goals after setting specific ones, I try to move forward by making plans step by step and fulfilling each one by one.”
What dreams do you have lately?
“A few. Firstly, a big goal I have is to be active with the EXO members for a long time. I want to periodically release albums and meet fans often through concerts even after we’ve aged. I hope to be very active in the musical sector too. If I have the chance, I dream of doing a musical on Broadway or advancing into Hollywood.”
With what attitude are you facing youth?
“While I am the type to make plans and calmly prepare for my future, I also do my best at certain times. One of my mottos is, ‘let’s exist in this moment’. I repeat it to myself whenever there is something important. I think the attitude of focusing in that moment is the best method to take a step forward closer towards the future image I hope to have.”
You always show an energetic image of EXO’s leader, where is the root of that energy?
“Setting my dreams and goals in detail and trying to fulfil each one of them becomes my inner driving force. Now that I am 8 years into my debut, I feel some responsibility for my current position, and that becomes my external driving force. I should meet the expectations of myself, the fans, and many others. Sometimes i becomes burdensome because I am a human too, but pressure that makes me feel good prevents me from stopping.”
You took good care of the staff on set. It feels like your delicate consideration is embedded in your body.
“I am the type to pay close attention to everyone’s feelings, whether it’s my members, friends, or staff. I think it’s because I am the leader. I meet a lot of people no matter where I go, and there are a lot of times I need to represent EXO, so I think it naturally became that way.”
When can we see Suho’s most natural image?
“I’m now most comfortable with my members, family, and school friends. When I meet the friends I made in school, I feel like I’m university student Kim Junmyeon instead of EXO’s Suho. We either play together in a pension we rent on the outskirts of Seoul or go to the sauna. Those friends accept me as I am.”
In 2018, you promoted busily as of course EXO’s Suho, but also as musical actor and actor Kim Junmyeon. What was the one activity in particular that left the deepest impression?
“All of them were good experiences. In particular, I remember the time we prepared for the musical <The Man Who Laughs>. I did not know that I would get closer to musicals as a genre, even up to when I played Rudolph in my first musical <The Last Kiss>. Even when I started this project [The Man Who Laughs], I started with the attitude that I’m learning from it. It was a big challenge in my life, but it was really enjoyable. I was comfortable going up on stage after I gradually got used to it. It was a special experience to exist as another person on stage for a long time.”
I feel like the time you spent working with other seniors as a rookie actor would have been very meaningful.
“As I was casted for <The Man Who Laughs> while I was filming my drama <Rich Man>, I was only able to join them just a month before the first show. I felt like I was very short on time, so I did not stop practising for the whole month. With the thought that I must not cause harm or inconvenience to the other seniors on stage with me, I practised all day except for when I was asleep. I memorized my lyrics even when I was eating. Reciting the lyrics for all four of my solo songs before I slept every night was the homework I gave myself. Doing that, I ended up performing even in my dreams (laughs). I feel like trust between actors is important for a musical performance, so I was proud and thankful that [the others] seemed to believe in me after seeing me [practice] before the first show started.”
Are there any genres or roles that you want to challenge in future musicals?
“There are a lot. I want to try <Jekyll and Hyde> when I become a bit older, and I want to try acting as a character that is the opposite of my role as Lee Yoochan in <Rich Man>. It’s a role where I am taciturn but throw out gemlike famous lines every time I speak, a role that leads the piece heavily. I hope to act in a scene that is able to stay in the viewers’ memory for a long time.”
We cannot leave out talking about EXO’s fifth album that was recently released. It feels like your music has deepened. Was there a part you paid special attention to?
“The choreography for ‘Tempo’ is really complex. It’s a completely different feeling from all our precious group dances, and if you look at it, you could say it’s a freestyle dance too. It’s like all eight members have their individual feels, but it’s unified as a whole. I paid a lot of attention to it, more than when we practice precise choreographies that matches all the angles. It’s our first album in a long time, and all our members have their own individual feels now that we are eight years into our debut. I was in charge of compromising the opinions that are actively exchanged among members, and it was very interesting.”
While you probably receive fresh motivation while promoting actively recently, I think you would have been stressed too. What is your own way of relieving stress or organising your thoughts?
“I make time to go for a vacation far away. I get to see and feel new things, but more than anything, I feel free. It’s the time when I get the feeling of escaping life. I’m existing as just Kim Junmyeon, not EXO’s Suho. Recently, I went to Fukuoka with Heechan, whom I got closer to during <Glory Days>. I went into a picturesque open-air bath and felt my exhaustion go away entirely, even though the weather was cold.”
You’re spending the start of 2019 with LEON. Do you put significant meaning into starting? If you had a new resolution for the new year?
“I think starting is already half of it. As it is important to take a good first step, I do make resolutions every January. ‘Let’s make 2019 a happy year with no regrets’. It’s my profile message on my messenger. I started on 1 January 2017 and only change the numbers every year. I try to make every day meaningful so that I can smile and say that all the past moments were valuable and precious when I look back on the past year.”
What plans do you have for promotions in 2019?
“Now that our repackaged album <Love Shot> has been released in December after our fifth album, I want to meet fans through a concert. For my personal wish, I’ve written lyrics that contain what I want to say, so I hope I can release them next time. As an actor, I want to definitely do one project that is either a movie, drama, or musical. For me too, now is the start of 2019.”
Please introduce the role you played in “Rich Man - A Liar is The Beginning of Love-”
“The role I played is Lee Yoochan, a genius businessman who suffers from ‘facial dyspnea’ who can’t distinguish the face of a woman he loves, and who thinks only of himself by the side. Yoochan is a very sad and naive person because he grew up alone from an early age. He doesn’t really mind the eyes of other. He may seem like a selfish and nasty guy, but in reality he is only lonely. I think that he actually want to be loved by many people.”
Please tell us the difference between the Japanese version and the Korean version, and the charm of the Korean version.
“The Japanese version and the Korean version have slightly different settings. The main character of the Japanese version is looking for a living mother, but the main character of the Korean version is looking not only for the mother but also for a loving woman, and there are a lot of sad episodes. But there is no big difference. I feel that the expression has become a little straight by the fact that the dialogue has become Korean. As a result, viewers may think that Lee Yoochan is a nasty guy.”
Please tell us what you prepared in advance to play this part.
“Lee Yoochan is a grumpy genius businessman who only thinks of himself.
The genius characters I’ve seen so far would act without consideration of others when they are devoted or concentrated on one thing. After finding common points of various types of geniuses, I analyzed the person named Lee Yoochan and thought about what kind of character he was.”
The main character of the Japanese version is said to be modeled after Steve Jobs. Have you made some effort (to learn) to play the Korean version of Lee Yoochan?
“I heard the story and watched the movie ‘Steve Jobs’. Since Yoochan is a genius but awkward character, I learned about character who is a genius but lack of sociality, also referring to the performance of Robert Downey Jr. in the movie ‘Iron Man’.”
In the drama, Yoochan is strong in digital, but what about Suho in reality?
“Actually, I don’t use many apps, and I don’t know much about personal computers. I don’t play games very much, so I’m close to analog humans. I like analog better than digital because I feel the warmth of human beings.”
It is opposite to the character. Yoochan uses the SNS “Mini Life” to look for his first love person Kim Boonhong who supported his lonely boyhood. If such a SNS exists, who would you like to look for?
“I want to meet teachers from elementary school. I learned a lot from elementary school teachers, so I would like you to see how I grew up.”
Do genius programmers Lee Yoochan and Suho himself have similar points and different points?
“First of all, I’m not a genius. Lee Yoochan’s expression is very straight and the action is big. The feeling of ups and downs of emotions seems like words come out earlier than rational judgment. But I’m a type who will say something after thinking too much about it. I think that part is different because I talk after I think in the other party’s position. Also, Lee Yoochan is not familiar with adulthood and is naive, so it has a cute side, but it may be similar (to me). I like to be annoyed if I can’t grow up. So I was able to play the fun scene.”
There are many actors of the same age appearing in this film, how was the atmosphere at the shooting site?
“It was a lot of fun. I filmed it while making fun with Ha Yeonsoo (the heroine Kim Bora). Oh Changsuk (who plays as Min Taejoo, a vice president and develop a battle of love with Yoochan) is a little older than me but he got along well with us, and we also heard a lot of stories from Kim Yewon (who plays as Min Taera, Min Taejoon’s sister). The other actors also tried to support each other while talking about acting and drama, and talking privately.”
Who was the mood maker among them?
“Yeonsoo always get excited whenever she looked at Changsuk or my condition is getting darker.”
Please tell us if there is a scene or name line that remains in the impression in the drama.
“There is a talk scene in episode 1. As it is a scene where we could understand Yoochan’s character well, I feel so worried yet excited when we filmed it. There were many good words to remember, but I think that it is an interesting scene because I also swear at the last minute.”
EXO has many members who play an active part as actors, do you look at each work and give advice?
“We don’t give much advice as we respect each other. However, while reading the script together with Sehun, he says, “This scene looks interesting” and jokes about it. It feels like we make fun with each other while reading each other script rather than advice.”
Lee Yoochan has a very bright figure to do his job perfectly. What do you think is the best thing Suho can do?
“When standing on stage, recording, acting, etc., I think I may be the best when I forget everything else and focus on things in front of my eyes.”
There was Yoochan’s line that “a dream is to change the world”, so what is your current dream?
“My closest dream is that ‘Rich Man’ will be a work loved by many people in Korea and Japan, and Lee Yoochan will be a character that remembered by people. The big dream is to be able to stay on stage with the members of EXO in the future.”
Lee Yoochan has his own style, but do you have any particular concerns about your life, your belongings, clothes, etc?
“Recently, I like oversized clothes like Hip-Hop fashion.”
What kind of work did Rich Man become for you?
“’Rich Man’ is a mini-series drama that I star for the first time, so I think it will be an unforgettable work. It is a very important character for me because it seems that there will be no time to play a genius, rich, selfish person.”
Please give a message to Japanese audiences.
“I think ‘Rich Man’ is a work that everyone enjoys, as the process of developing Yoo-chan’s opposite Bora gradually into love emotions while holding a favor is depicted intriguingly. You may feel that it is a drama, so you may feel that it is a reality, but I think there are many aspects that can be real and sympathetic. It is a drama that heals us by giving laughter and excitement to us who are having trouble. I hope I can enjoy the process by which Lee Yoo-chan meets Bora and regains humanity. As it is a popular work in Japan, I did my best to shoot with other performers and staff so as not to disappoint.
Please support the Korean version of ‘Rich Man’ as well as the Japanese version ‘Rich Man, Poor Woman’. Thank you.”
