“Between two tall gateposts of roughhewn stone... we behold the gray front of the old parsonage”...The Old Manse in Concord, Massachusetts. . . Built along the banks of the Concord River by Rev. William Emerson in 1770, the home is a short walk from the Old North Bridge where British & Colonial troops clashed on the morning of April 19th, 1775 on the first day of the American Revolution. The battle was witnessed by the occupants of the Manse from the upstairs windows. . . The Reverend Emerson was father to writer Ralph Waldo Emerson, who would take up residence at the home sometime later. It was here Emerson wrote the first drafts of what would be “Nature” a seminal text of the Transcendentalist Movement. The home would continue in its literary pedigree when Nathanial Hawthorne and his new bride Sofia began renting the home in 1842. Henry David Thoreau would plant a vegetable garden on the property to welcome the newlyweds. #historichomes #oldmanse #igersnewengland #transcedentialism #thoreau #ralphwaldoemerson #nathanielhawthorne #frontdoordecor #frontdoor (at The Old Manse) https://www.instagram.com/p/CLknAVUFPbI/?igshid=1el6lltbrxfef
