Epoxy Cast vs. VPI: Which Dry-Type Transformer Technology is Better?
In the core world of dry-type transformers, two mainstream manufacturing technologies have long dominated: epoxy resin casting and vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI). Faced with these two technologies, engineers, purchasers and end users often face a dilemma: which technology is better? This article will deeply analyze the core characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the two, as well as the best application scenarios.
What is Epoxy cast dry-type transformer and impregnated dry-type transformer
Epoxy cast dry-type transformer is a power transformer that uses epoxy resin as insulating material; impregnated dry-type transformer is a special type of transformer, whose main feature is that the core and winding are not immersed in insulating oil, but are cooled by air convection and other methods.
Core technology principle of Dry-type transformer
Casting / Resin Encapsulated
The epoxy resin cast dry-type transformer places the coil of the high-voltage winding in a vacuum environment, and vacuum casts the liquid epoxy resin into the mold, allowing it to completely penetrate the coil gap and wrap the conductor and insulation material. It is then cured under temperature control to form a hard, smooth, solid insulation protective shell that is tightly integrated with the coil.
Vacuum Pressure Impregnation
The vacuum pressure impregnation dry-type transformer is to put the wound coil into a large vacuum pressure tank. First, it is subjected to high vacuum treatment to extract the air and moisture inside the coil, and then liquid insulating resin (usually polyester, epoxy or silicone resin) is injected under vacuum. Then high pressure (several times the atmospheric pressure) is applied to force the resin to penetrate deeply between the conductor and the insulation layer of the coil. Finally, the coil is taken out and cured at high temperature in an oven to harden the resin.

Recommended application scenarios
Epoxy cast dry-type transformer
Extremely harsh environments: high humidity, high salt spray, high dust, highly corrosive gases (chemical, offshore, ships, mining, tunnels).
Highest fire safety requirements: crowded places (hospitals, airports, subways, commercial centers), data center core equipment, high-rise buildings.
Ultra-large capacity/high voltage requirements: main transformers of large industrial and mining enterprises, regional power distribution, renewable energy grid-connected booster stations.
Minimum maintenance/maintenance-free requirements: places that are difficult to reach or have extremely high maintenance costs.
Strict requirements for partial discharge: places with extremely high requirements for power quality, such as precision laboratories and semiconductor factories.
impregnated dry-type transformer
Standard industrial and commercial applications: factory workshops, office buildings, shopping malls, schools, general infrastructure (distribution rooms).
Cost-sensitive projects: limited budgets and strict control of initial investment.
High requirements for heat dissipation/overload capacity: occasions with large load fluctuations or periodic impact loads.
Spaces that require lighter and more compact designs: space-constrained distribution rooms or equipment integration.
Medium capacity and below applications (mainstream application range): medium and low voltage distribution from tens of kVA to several MVA.
Epoxy resin casting and VPI impregnation dry-type transformers have their own advantages. When choosing a dry-type transformer, users can choose the appropriate dry-type transformer according to their project application scenarios, environmental conditions, performance requirements, and budget constraints.
