Alchemy
I wholeheartedly agree with the sermons of Thich Nhat Hanh, bless their soul and may they rest in peace, amen. Specifically on anger, on the act of owning your anger, instead of repressing it, or throwing it away - for repressing/throwing your anger makes you lesser than yourself. The most venerable Thich Nhat Hanh compares anger to mud, the dark soil that feeds the process of self-growth, so anger is useful. Anger depends on the context, so this exercise may or may not be relevant.
Instead of retaliating in anger to someone who is angry at you, examine your own anger towards them, why does it stem forth, what or who caused your inner turmoil, did they do so knowingly, for if so, their soul suffers. Try and understand the suffering of another who cannot control their pain or self-hatred for they are in need of compassion, and self-love at a deeper level; a person with a wound cannot feel peace until they heal. While healing another human being is a greater responsibility than you need to take on (unless you need to), what you can do in the moment, or in the face of anger is to breathe in, deeply in and out, and tell them, or tell yourself,
I understand you,
I understand your pain,
I understand your anger.
I extend compassion towards you.
I hope you heal.
Then leave, move forward with your life in peace.
And the anger that rises in retaliation within you towards them will dissipate, and in its place we will see the alchemical lotus bloom, transforming the mud of anger to compassion and understanding, maybe even love. Maybe even healing and reunion. Amen.
