the og nier isnt necessary to play automata cause automata takes place like 10,000 years after replicant so replicant will give context for the world automata inhabits but it is literally ancient history at that point. though a large part of the plot in automata from the second playthrough onwards will retroactively spoil a twist from the first game if thats something you care about. personally i played replicant first so i cant say if that knowledge would necessarily make or break going into it if you played it after automata, but if you dont care about spoilers i'd say automata works as a good entry point bc its definitely the most polished and has the best gameplay
