Oikawa literally built himself a whole new life across the world from his home country, speaking a new language and in a completely different culture. He became a citizen of Argentina and represented them in the olympics. He really did that. And he’s still in touch with his former seijoh teammates enough that they cheer for him against their own national team. He was defeated over and over through school, only to come back as the final boss against a team full of former or would’ve been rivals, the star setter of his new home. More mature, more truly confident in himself, and having fun win or lose.
Both Hinata and Oikawa leave Japan to further their volleyball career in South America, but they do so for different reasons, and it’s reflected in their roles in the final chapter.
Hinata left because he wanted to be able to stand on his own, to be a valuable player without Kageyama or any other skilled setter. He found success in high school, making it to nationals with his team, but he still had a lot of work to do to cut it as a pro player on his own. Beach volleyball, with only two people per team, was a great tool for improvement since there was no one else to compensate for his weaknesses like in high school. Hinata took two years to make himself into a solid rounded player, worthy to stand with teammates like the MSBY Black Jackals.
Oikawa on the other hand, his motivations are harder for me to explain. He never made it to the national stage during high school, never got the recognition to go to a national camp either; Oikawa was faced with prodigies like Kageyama and Ushijima. They improved rapidly and he could never seem to break past them. Oikawa left Japan determined to improve not to prove himself worthy of a place amongst them, because he was never on that side of success, so he left to prove that through his dedication and hard work, he could succeed against them. During his time abroad, Oikawa rediscovered the joy he found in volleyball, which he had lost in the face of endless defeat.
In 402, Hinata is on the Japanese national team, taking his earned place beside other formidable players from throughout the series. Oikawa is the main setter for the Argentinian national team, facing off against all his greatest rivals, but this time he has the abilities and skilled teammates so that they’re on equal ground. Oikawa is the first and last rival of haikyuu, and he’s had to fight just as hard as the protagonist to earn that title.
