elyse was normally cool and collected. so to watch her confront these parents of his eleven year old patient, accuse them of malnourishing her, stunned the pediatric resident. he understood where she was coming from, the girl was severely malnourished and was a figure skater. in a way, it reminded of him and something he would do; but it was even over the top for him. after tyler dragged the nurse away, john stayed with the patient, and continued on with his exam and stayed with the family for the next thirty or so minutes.

the parents wanted to formally complain, and he had nurse maggie come in to see if she could fight the flame or proceed with it. as john left the room, tablet in hand, he looked at the parents. ❛ once again, I am truly sorry for this. the blood tests will be posted soon and we will know more then.  ❜ he said with a small smile, trying to ease the situation.

he looked around for tyler, and when he saw him through the glass windows in the doctors lounge, he made a beeline for it. ❛ what the hell was that? ❜ john asked, seeing that the nurse wasn't with the trauma surgeon. it was just them. he really didn't want to be mad at the nurse, but this was a tough situation.  ❛ they want to formally complain over that. and I can't believe I am saying this but I think they should. ❜

❛ is this some kind of joke, doctor brendan? ❜ sharon questioned as she sits at her desk, looking up at the man. surgeons. some of them can be so childlike and she really didn't know how to respond. tyler was a great surgeon and was an asset to the trauma team. when it came to will, sure will has caused some headaches . . . bad ones over the years, but she can't deny that the red head was also an asset too. ❛ i don't need this right now. either work together when you are assigned to the same patient, or get your resume ready. ❜ she said matter of factly, shrugging. with the death threat on her life, the drama between archer and lenox, she didn't know how much longer she could take.

reindeer headband on her head as she moves through the emergency department. as much as she loved christmas, she also didn't mind working on christmas eve. it was usually a little slower, things were usually more light hearted and joyful, and the food was a bonus. the hospital catered a meal for all of the departments working. a expensive bill surely, but everybody knew the hospital could afford it. 

the only thing she hated was that she was away from her daughter, but working tonight freed up the next two days so she really couldn't complain. and besides, aubrey was very much used to her working. 

this holiday was also much different. she had a boyfriend. it was clear as day that doctor tyler brendan was the love of her life. he was handsome, charming, treated her with respect. sure, at first he annoyed her so much she couldn't stand him, but then she was able to know him deep down, proof that you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover. 

she had to deliver some test tubes to the to the basement lab and was maybe gone for a total of ten minutes. only that long because she was talking to a nurse, kelly, on the cardio surgery unit. she was able to get to know her from both patrick and tyler alike. as soon as she walked back into the ED, the familiar music started and she looked around at her coworkers. some were acting natural watching, some were dancing, and then another handful were looking at her. she didn't know what to think besides the obvious... what the hell was going on?

then her eyes landed on tyler who broke away from the crowd.  he was walking straight towards her, immediately going down on a knee. next thing she notices the small velvet box in tylers hand. she felt her heart skip several beats, and for a split second she thought she might be patricks next patient. ❛ oh my god. ❜ she said, now realizing what was happening. she could feel her eyes start to water as he talks, wiping them with the back of her eyes. as he finished, her head started to bob up and down and she said the word that everyone oin the room was waiting for.

The last thing she remembered was the blinding pain of the knife ripping into her stomach, followed by the taste of blood in her mouth. Nothing after that made much sense. Why? Why in Chicago? She had left her old life behind.

Was this how she would die?

It was the unending beeping that woke her up first, her eyes struggling to focus on the multitude of numbers and machines that surrounded her. The lights were dim. No one else was in her room. She turned her head to the door to see a nurses' station not five feet away.

Shit.

One machine beeps increased in speed, making Lily's head jerk around - far more quickly than she should have moved, a response she instantly regretted. This had to be more than a stomach wound. Or was it truly that bad?

Pain medicine had to be coming out of one of those bags, because Lily knew the pain was far less than it should have been, given her last memory. Her heart was racing, something the damned machine was making everyone aware of against her desire.

She wrapped her fingers around the wires connected to the leads on her chest, yanking them away. That only changed the sound from a beep to a constant hum. Fuck.

The door flung open, and she turned to see a man there. "Please, shut it up. Make the machine stop. Please." Her hands balled into fists, nails pressing into her palms. Hospitals were nothing more than a waking nightmare for her, and she wanted nothing more than to run past the man to escape.
