Gift guide for the constant traveler

Many of the guides I've seen for what to gift a road warrior have useful items but they are often things seasoned travelers purchase early on in their adventures. Since it's the holiday season and I'm just finishing up a year of back-to-back jet-setting, I thought I would create a list of items that I love or want for the holidays. 

Multi-functional carry-on:

The more things with a dual purpose the better. For a very long time, I was in search of a brief case that I could use on-site, but that also could be used on day trips and as a carry on. Some were too stiff while others were too limiting in space, or uncomfortable to travel with. Last year for my birthday, my husband gave me the wonderful gift of a Lo & Sons bag. I've quickly become a devoted fan of the pocketed gem...using it as a carry-on, day trip, work, and gym bag. It's easily converted for whatever you may need...including a pocket for shoes when using it as a gym bag or an easily accessible toiletries pouch when traveling. 

While it may look simple, this bag is chic in every sense of the word and goes with everything. To compliment my "everything" bag, I'm currently lusting over The Pearl by Lo&Sons. It is small enough to be the perfect run around bag but has the signature pockets of my OMG bag. 

*Update: I now own my coveted "Pearl" and its just as functional, simple and elegant as my OMG bag. If you are looking for a great, sleek should bag, this is your piece.*

When looking for the perfect "everything" bag for your traveler, remember fabric, pockets, and multi-use functionality. 

Something Homey: 

One of my coworkers gave me a small candle from anthropologie and it has traveled with me everywhere. It gives a bland hotel room a lovely scent of familiar, and helps turn a night stand into an area of relaxation. I also travel with a small spray bottle of lavender...I'm not sure it works, but it convinces me that my bed is a place to relax and turn off the computer. 

Find out what your friend or family member really loves about their bedroom or home, or how they like to relax, and find a small token to remind them of that while traveling. This is a great stocking stuffer and a very thoughtful gift. 

Electronic subscriptions:

When I first started traveling, I subscribed to my 3 favorite magazines on my iPad. Originally I was just doing it because my iPad was new and shiny and I wanted more reasons to look at it. Then it became a life saver...lightening my bag and putting everything in one neat place. 

If your traveler is a book lover, you can never go wrong with a book club membership. My sister recently told me about a service called Oyster books, that allows you to read the latest and greatest books on your tablet. It's like a library card for best sellers. It's like any subscription service...around $10 a month will gain you access to some amazing books and you will never run out of things to read on the plane or train. 

Portable Charger: 

I have two phones ...one for work and a personal. Depending on where I am in the world, one will work and the other won't. Unfortunately they have very different chargers. Last Christmas, my mother-in-law got me a stylish portable charger.It's cute, small and a life-saver when your battery gets dangerously low. This one from free people is a lovely tribute to the wandering soul. 

Roller Perfume:

If your the person is a scent junky, they probably dread lugging bottles of perfume or cologne on their checked luggage. A small roller of their favorite perfume/cologne can fit easily in their carry on and make them feel instantly refreshed after a long flight. Bonus points if you find a roller in their signature scent. Scent is a huge memory generator, so if its something that she/he puts on for big events, having it with them as they walks into a foreign office will boost their confidence. 

Sensible Shoes:

If you have ever had a short layover in a large airport then you know the pain of running through terminals and playing frogger with on-coming crowds. No imagine doing that in business attire. One of the staples of any traveler is comfortable shoes that can walk into a meeting if you running from the airport. My little black flats have been a life saver, and not just because I look like a new born gazelle in heels. If you are looking for a durable pair that save space and look great, look no further than Tieks. The price is a can be a little steep, but they are worth the investment and your traveler will be thrilled. 

Oversized Scarf:

Many articles suggested a blanket for the travel afficionado, but what I've found far more valuable is an oversized scarf that can double as a blanket or pillow. Not a scarf person? Get a really cozy sweater or pull over. Most airlines will have blankets, especially on longer flights. A blanket is just one more thing to pack, and I'm all about dual-purpose packing. 

Stocking Stuffers:

I'm usually against the idea of travel tags and passport covers, because those are a bit more personal and many travelers like to find their own. If the person is an adventurer and you know their style, a luggage tag can be a really thoughtful and useful gift. Don't spend too much money on these, since they will get beat up when loading and unloading. These options from esty are sweet and customized, making your bag easy to spot. 

Nice travel-sized products can be hard to come by, so another great idea is a subscription to birch box...where all products come in perfect sample sizes for travel. This serves a dual purpose ( as mentioned above, I love dual purpose products). They will get travel supplies monthly while feeling glam, and they will be exposed to new products they wouldn't otherwise see or use. 

If your traveler isn't a product junky, a cute way to give them essentials of travel is through a great toiletries bag filled with all the things you don't want to buy for travels. Think advil, dental floss, mini-deoderant, toothbrush, toothpaste, nail file/clippers, mini-face wash, hair ties and a comb. Think of the basics you would want to have on you if your luggage was lost, and put them in a pretty bag. You're friend/family member will be thrilled to have fewer things to buy and have it already packed up for them.
