Whole Foods Market issues yet another recall!

The effort that Whole Foods Market makes in terms of sourcing local organic produce and getting them to the kitchen tables of everyday Americans is perfectly laudable. If only their packaging staff were more diligent, they would stop being featured for all the wrong reasons. Over the past couple of months, Whole Foods Market had to issue four voluntary recalls, three of which (including the most recent one) could have been avoided if they were just a little more careful!

In the latest recall, the Boulder, CO based company is recalling their Coconut Curry Cauliflower Salad (PLUs:  27436000000, 27436100000 and Best By Date: 08/01/2015) because of undeclared almonds. Consuming this product may be fatal for people who suffer from tree nut allergies. These products were sold from the prepared foods sections in clear plastic containers.

The error was discovered during an internal product review and have already been removed from the shelves. However, some offending units were sold via the following locations in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Utah and Idaho:

Almond is a type of a tree nut, unlike peanuts which is a legume. Hence people who are allergic to almonds are usually allergic to all other tree nuts as well! Other examples of tree nuts would be hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts and cashews. Tree nut allergies are not to be taken lightly because tree nut allergens are most often linked to cases of anaphylaxis, which can be fatal if no one is at hand to administer a dose of epinephrine. Other less severe symptoms of tree nut allergies are:

Shortness of breath

Nasal congestion, often accompanied by a runny nose

Itchiness that may manifest in any part of the body, but typically occurs in the mouth, throat or the eyes

Swallowing becomes difficult

Nausea and other symptoms of general malaise

Abdominal pain accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea

Whole Foods Market is saying that there have not been any reported illnesses that were caused by the consumption of these products. However, if you have consumed Coconut Curry Cauliflower Salad in the recent past and are displaying any of the aforementioned symptoms, then you should contact your family physician right away!

Whole Foods Market is requesting all their customers to discard the product and bring the receipt to the place of purchase for a full refund. Every time I watch a cooking show, especially the competition ones, and someone adds peanut oil or some other form of tree nut or peanut I cringe and inside scream, "what if someone has a nut allergy!"

I know that obviously they wouldn't be allowed to use nut products if a judge or fellow chef had an allergy. It's just that I can't help it. It's my life living with someone who does have peanut and tree nut allergies along with other food ones.

Hub's allergies aren't touch or airborne. He'd have to ingest the items to have a reaction. Still, I'm uber careful whenever I do have nuts in the house or eat them myself. And every label gets checked before we buy something, especially after I discovered that his favorite Goya rice mixes started having "may contain tree nut or peanuts" warnings on them.

I had the pleasure of working for Sony as a brand ambassador at Cafe Stritch for the Cinequest Film Festival. The event was an all day event for me, meaning I would be given the challenge of finding allergy friendly eats during my lunch and dinner breaks. The Sony Demo was being hosted at brand new San Jose based Cafe, Cafe Stritch. The Cafe was still serving their soft launch menu, so I decided to talk to the kitchen to see if my food allergies could be accommodated. The soft launch menu being posted usually means that the house chef is on location - the guru of resources for foodies with food allergies. To my pleasant surprise, the kitchen can accommodate tree nut allergies with their current menu (please always run by your food allergies with a server or restaurant rep before ordering). I was so delighted I purchased dinner for myself and the other two models on site with me. We indulged in a healthful artichoke and sundried tomato pizza with fontina cheese and gluten free crust for only $6.50. Their menu is tapa style American cuisine. Think small plates of flat bread and cheese entrees, pizzas, tomato soup and grilled cheese, chicken and veggies, sopas, ensalates, and chicken and waffles. Their tapa style menu makes this cafe a great option for dining with co workers or a small group of friends. Also an ideal event space, the cafe has a full bar and separate VIP room. The location is on 1st avenue and San Carlos, close to cinema 12. Definitely a place worth checking out my fellow Silicon Valley friends. Manja!
