I have a 0/50 Tree of Perdition, an Erebos, God of the Dead, and an opponent with 6 life. I target that opponent with the tree's ability. What happens?

Nothing happens.

In order for Tree of Perdition to be able to exchange its toughness with a player’s life total, that player needs to be able to gain or lose enough life for their life total to become that value.

Since your opponent can’t gain life, the exchange can’t happen in the situation you describe and thus no exchange will be made. Tree of Perdition remains a 0/50 and your opponent remains at 6 life. All that you’ve accomplished is tapping your Tree.

So, I’m going to make a copy of Tree of Perdition. Next turn (or with Haste): I’m going to pay one mana to make Tree of Perdition a 1/1. I tap it to exchange it’s toughness with my opponent.

@magicjudge just talked about Axis of Mortality and Tainted Remedy, but let’s take it one step further, especially so close to Halloween!

Tainted remedy is great against any deck that wants to gain life, but how do you know they will be unless you force them to? With Triskaidekaphobia in play, you can choose “everyone gain one life” and you’ll be the only one that actually does.

Or you can use this (possibly in a commander deck with a certain Siege Tower that was previously discussed) to get anyone above 13 life down to the perfect amount. Yes, Tree of Redemption affects you, but you can stack Axis of Mortality to trigger before Triskaidekaphobia so you exchange life totals at the last moment. Just make sure you wait until the Axis of Mortality ability is on the stack before using the Redemption’s ability, or they can destroy the Axis so you can’t change life totals and your Triskaidekaphobia kills you.

Axis of Mortality is a cool new card, but triggers at the beginning of your upkeep. Means that you’ve typically broadcast it for a turn and people can choose not to attack, keeping life totals roughly level. But if you’re playing with life totals, there are a few cards that may come to mind.

Triskadekaphobia means that 13 life is just as deadly as 0, and with Axis, you can change which player is at 13 life before the ‘phobia triggers, simply by stacking abilities.

Tree of Redemption changes your life total, but you can then use it with the Axis to change an opponent’s total to 13.

Or use Tree of Perdition and change your opponent’s life total directly.

Doran, the Siege Tower features all of these colors, is great for protecting your life total, and sets you up for some fun Treefolk tribal.
