A Guide to Trekking in Sikkim
Sikkim Goecha la Trek rated as the sixth most strenous trek in the Indian Himalayas is located in the Kanchenjunga National Park in Sikkim Himalaya. Camping sites are located at an average altitude of 4000m. The highlight of this Trek is the Goecha la Pass located at the foot of the third highest mountain in the world Mt.Kanchenjunga at an altitude of 4990m. Beyond Goechala Pass lies the Yangtse Valley which ultimately joins the Green lake basin in North Sikkim close to the border with Tibet. The Goecha la Pass Trek in Sikkim is a eight days affair and is totally a camping trek. The entire trek route falls in the Kanchenjunga National Park which of late has been granted the UNESCO heritage tag. There are a couple of Trekkers huts built by the Sikkim Tourism Department but is very Basic. The Entire National Park is bereft of any human settlements. This is being done to protect the National Park which is home to the Red Panda, Musk Deer, Clouded Leopard, Himalayan sloth Bear in the lower parts & the Snow leopard, Blue Sheep & a host of Birds in the upper reaches of the Sikkim Himalaya.
