Monday, May 5: Tremonti, "From the Sky"

Creed took their share of abuse, and Alter Bridge quickly settled into being a journeyman hard rock act, but through it all Mark Tremonti came across as a sincere and unpretentious metalhead, and maybe a bit cooler than his bands. So it was great to see him coming into his own with his Tremonti band records, which were largely unfussy but resolutely metallic, and A Dying Machine was a shockingly strong headbanger that transcended the inherent schlock of its concept narrative with straight between the eyes riffing, tremendous drumming from Garrett Whitlock and Mark’s killer vocals- it shouldn’t have been a surprise by this point since this was the fourth Tremonti record but it was still startling that he was every bit as strong a singer as Myles Kennedy. “From the Sky” was fast and banging but still catchy, showing that Mark was able to apply his craft in a squarely metallic context. It wasn’t thrash or extreme or anything like that, and yes it did belong in the same continuum as his work with Creed and Alter Bridge, but was totally its own thing and felt legit heavy.
