I’ve been a silent admirer of Trevor Brown’s art for years now. I read in one of your posts that he illustrated for Peter Sotos? Is there anywhere I can find that?
Thank you for all of your research <3
You are so welcome!
For anyone unaware, Trevor Brown is an artist - a skilled one, I would say - he has a very sort of distinctive, instantly-recognizable, fully-formed art style. But I would say that some of his subject matter is mmm... it's a little much. For most people, at least. It's mostly these doll-like girls, usually with some cute elements juxtaposed against what can only be described as hardcore S&M elements (ie. mouth-gags, latex clothing, being tied up, bruises, etc), along with sexualized medical devices.
But here's a couple tame ones I found to sort of convey his art style:
So yeah, Trevor Brown has come up a few times in my research. I uncovered some kind of fucked up background info about him associating with certain publications. Sorry, sorry, I shouldn't be a vague asshole here. I just need time to research a bit further before I start like slandering anyone lol.
Anyway, back to your original point: so I can't directly post any of the artwork he did for Peter Sotos because I think it's a bit too fucked. I feel like Tumblr would NOT be super thrilled with it.
But I can perhaps describe them here, and maybe give directions on where it can be found:
"Quality Time" (6 black-and-white illustrations)
I previously mentioned this as being arguably the most disturbing story I've read. It was originally published in 1994 in the issue #4 of the magazine "Answer Me!" by Jim Goad. The issues can be found on Internet Archive.
(⚠️WARNING⚠️ - Not only is this a profoundly disturbing story in it's own right, but it was also illustrated with what appears to be some sort of crime-scene photos of real children. I don't know what the fuck is going on, why are people like this? Just publish the fucking text by itself jesus christ)
Whitehouse cover art (at least 7 illustrations)
Cover art for at least xxx albums by Whitehouse, the "band" that Sotos was "a part of" (I'm using both of those terms very charitably). The albums were: Twice Is Not Enough, Another Crack of the White Whip, Halogen, Dictator, Quality Time (unrelated to the story I guess?), Mummy and Daddy, and Just Like a Cunt.
(Side note: the 1991 Whitehouse single Still Going Strong curiously has cover art by Peter Sotos, which is interesting because I'm unaware of Sotos ever drawing anything else.)
Timeless cover art (2 illustrations)
This is an obscure French publisher who released what appears to be a zine and a book in 2000 and 2004 respectively, which were some of the only known places to find content from the unpublished manuscript for "Playground Sex" by Sotos. Both contained cover art by Brown.
(Fun fact: despite there only being 100 copies in existence, I did manage to get my grubby little mitts on the scans of the zine! I won't blow up his spot, but huge thanks to my source on this, if you're reading this. I mean I now have no idea where to upload them since Internet Archive banned me but whatever)
