Tribe Culture

Recently met a gentleman Jeremy Houchens, who defines his field an intersection of creativity, technology and culture. During our conversation, I realized that Jeremy really notice very little details from another person and was able to translate them in his unique way through photography, conversations and learning experiences. I felt many interesting thoughts shine through our chat, and there are great values behind those ideas. So I came back and searched about Jeremy. Not surprisingly, I found his website full of decent content as what I have felt from the chat.

One thing that I remembered Jeremy mentioned about himself, was his life-changing experience through a leadership training program. He also referred to this TED talk by David Logan, which I got a chance to watch it today. The interesting ideas behind Mr. Logan’s talk was that we form different tribes in everyday life. The 5 different stages of tribe culture refers to groups who have extremely distinctive mind-set and hold completely different values in their life. Some people live their whole life staying in one stage, some are fortunate to jump and experience several different stages. The two most important messages from the “tribal leadership” talk are that 1) leaders are those who can involve with people from all stages of the tribes, and who can move people into a new level; 2) “we are great” is way more vital to “I’m great”.

That is what so called “culture”, something formed when people are gathered. It became so interesting to me that I learned much more about groups, communities and circles in the U.S., where “individualism” was such a dominating concept in the culture. I have always thought about the interesting combination of being independent and social, the way which a lot of people lives in the U.S. Probably “individualism” and “group culture” are not two contradictory concept indeed. While “individualism” refers to one’s freedom of thoughts, being and values; “group” or “tribe” indicates that one can actually find a community of people who share the similar thoughts, being and values. As a tribe leader, it’s not that self-development toward “I’m great” was unessential; it is that moving toward “we are great” can actually make an stronger impact among groups, thus the individual can start to make a difference to a higher purpose in the world.
