Reworking the Tribe of Rushing Water

(Haha sorry I keep posting so late, work makes writing difficult)

So the Tribe of Rushing Water is pretty problematic in canon. As part of my rewrite of the journey arc, I am attempting to rework them to be a little less vulnerable and needing saving. Partially I will be changing around plot points, but also i wanted to work on making them a more solid and rounded culture.

First, since my rewrite is based around the Appalachian mountains, the terrain and stuff is very different, so no predominantly rocky snowy mountains. It's also unlikely to have a massive waterfall cave base. But I am going to keep a waterfall as a marker for the entrance of the place, and a small cave system is where the Tribe shelters.

Tribe life begins at birth, with Tribe membership and blood being determined in the case of the parents (usually the mother) being of tribe blood. Kits are named at the dawn of the day of their first new moon, (if they are born very close to a new moon, the tribe waits for the next new moon), at that point the mother exposes the kits to their first sunrise, and calls their names to their ancestors. Tribe kits are named for their pelt colors, and their names are often very descriptive, as part of mothers wishes to impress the ancestors with her kits health and vitality, that they may bless them. The kits names are often spoken as similes such as “This one is like an Eagle Soaring in the Sky” which is shortened to Eagle. Some say this is because while the ancestors can see all that lies beneath the stars, they cannot see very well during the day, because the light of the sun is too bright.Yet the sun is still important, as it is considered the protector of the realm of the living, which is why, even though the kits spend their first moon in the caves, similar to in their mothers womb, they must be exposed to the sun as a symbol of birth and health.

For the most part, Tribe kits spend their early lives in the caves, learning navigation, but with frequent expeditions outside to ensure that the kits do not become over sensitive to light. Around the age of four moons, earlier than the clans, kits become Untested. Untested are the younger kit/and apprentice aged cats, who learn the ways of the tribe and the basics of survival. After four moons, they are tested, and their skills and talents decide what role they will play in the clan. The Untested are trained in groups, better helping them learn the necessary social skills to improve life for the Tribe, as well as form bonds of friendship among them. The last four moons before they reach true adulthood are called the Unjourneyed (aka Im still figuring out a name for these, I didnt like Tested, but basically its the time between their testing and their journey. Once they reach their twelfth moon they become official adults in the eyes of the tribe, and this is when they undergo their Journey. This journey is one which simulates the original journey which their ancestors made, and is a journey of self-discovery for the young tribe cats. It allows them to work out any of their wandering tendencies, and screens the cats who truly wish to be tribe members from those who do not. Roughly half of them return from the journey to become full members of the tribe, and it is not uncommon for a she-cat to return pregnant to give new blood and kits to the clan. Unfortunately the journey is treacherous, and some cats do get lost, or just dont survive. Each journey is unique to the cat who undertakes it, and that includes the direction from which they set out. But it is said that those who truly believe in the Ancestors and wish to return home, will be guided home by the stars.

Instead of just Prey-Hunter and Cave Guards, they have a few other roles. They have the roles of Prey-Finder, Watcher, Guard, Guides, and Nurses. Each one has specific sets of skills which they cultivate, but due to the comprehensive training they gain as Untested, they can function in all roles if necessary. Prey-finders are the hunters, and they generally hunt in shifts, so that there is always some cat out and about making sure the Tribe is fed. Watchers are lookouts, they scan the skies, but also watch the borders and territory, and are often the quickest runners and have the keenest eyesight. Guards protect the main cave, and are sent out to make sure any dangerous elements in the Tribe’s lands is dealt with, these are usually the best fighters in the Tribe. Guides are the cats chosen to work best with young cats, assessing their potential and guiding them through their early Untested moons, as well as functioning as advisors to the older . Nurses are the nursing mothers and caretakers of kits and the ones who ensure that the camp in the tunnels is clean and well maintained, they also have a minimal understanding of first aid, and can help the elderly or the young deal with minor injuries and complaints so that their Leader can attend to the more dangerous sicknesses and wounds.

Their leader is still both the leader and healer, although he takes the name of Starteller instead of Stoneteller. Startellers stay close to the main complex of caves, and rarely emerge in daylight. It has been said that in the past some Starteller’s eyes became so used to the darkness that going out in a bright sunlight made them blind, but this is considered to be unlikely. There are always two Startellers, one who is the full leader at the time, and their successor. Starteller successors are chosen from cats in the Tribe during the moons after their testing. If a cat shows greater commitment, greater interest in Tribe life, and no desire to journey, they are often chosen as a successor. Sometimes, the Ancestors will encourage certain cats, or will indicate cats which they approve of for the current Starteller to choose from, but no cat is required to become Starteller, and sometimes a successor is chosen from younger cats who have returned from the journey.

In any case, I hope to try and connect the Tribe’s understanding of Ancestors somewhat with Starclan. They will still be different, but there will be enough similarities that they can identify with clan cats. I still need to work out some of their culture, but I think I at least have a good basis to make them separate from the clans, but a little more unique than in canon.
