I didn't start reading Tamora Pierce until I was 17 or so. I was going through a really rough time, and just kinda binging on books to try to escape. One of those was Trickster's Queen- They didn't have Trickster's Choice and I didn't realize at first that I was reading out of order. Of course, that led to me reading everything she wrote, over and over again, eventually getting my mom into them, too! Her books and characters are a huge influence and comfort to me now.
Isn’t it amazing what her stories can do? I always turn to them when I’m seeking comfort as well.
