Keaton certainly hadn’t been treasure hunting, but even he knew it was better not to tell Anna how he’d found her. Wolfskins had rather sensitive ears and an unmatched sense of smell; he could identify Anna’s current state from a mile away if he wanted. Of course he had to investigate, he needed to know why she was so upset, if there was anything he could do to help. But of course, he’d already messed that up. As pack leader, he couldn’t afford the luxury of being kind, of being soft, but he couldn’t pass by someone in need of his help.
“Yeah, I guess you could say that,” Keaton answered, sniffing at Anna’s face. “So what’s got you down? I mean, since I’m out here, I might as well do something to make you stop crying, since we’re allies and all.” Times like these made Keaton dearly wish he knew how to be more careful with his words. This was a delicate situation, after all. If he upset Anna too much, she might not be willing to allow Keaton to help her out. Even he knew that much.
