I'm giving up on the thread trimmer. It's great when it works, but you can't use it if your RP partner doesn't use Beta, if they don't have Xkit, if they're posting on mobile, if a Tumblr update broke it, or...as my grandfather used to say when we weren't catching any fish...if you're holding your mouth the wrong way.
Making new threads linked to asks doesn't seem to work either, so from now on I am just starting new threads as a title and who it's for, and I'll add the actual reply under a Read More. That should keep threads we can't edit from clogging up the dash.
I'll still trim threads to the best of my ability, but I have yet to find out how to reliably do that, and I'm not holding my breath. I've noticed a few mutuals doing what I just described, and it seems to work well.
