Favorite German Words
Die Schnapsdrossel = literally, „schnapps throat” or gorge, a booze hound. A humorous expression for a schnapps drinker or straight-out alcoholic. Originally also a word for a person who, for a few shots of alcohol, will tell on suspects or criminals, like the bum across the street who sees everything or the guy at the bar. It’s slightly dated as it first appeared as a slang word in the late 1800’s but it’s still funny.
A similar word with the same meaning is “Der Schluckspecht”, something like “gulping woodpecker”, as in the bird. Also see this physics toy. :)
