Triptorelin is Widely Used as a Palliative Treatment for Advanced Prostate Cancer that is Hormone-dependent
Triptorelin is a gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist that inhibits testosterone (in men) and oestrogen (in women) synthesis and is used to treat advanced prostate cancer. Although triptorelin is connected to a low rate of transient serum enzyme increases after treatment, it has not been proven to cause clinically evident acute liver impairment.
Triptorelin (trip" toe rel' in) is a decapeptide analogue of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) that acts on the pituitary to cause the synthesis and release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), two gonadotropins that stimulate testosterone production in the male testes and oestrogen synthesis in the female ovaries. Triptorelin and other GnRH agonists generate a rise in gonadotropin release at first, but this is followed by a decrease in gonadotropin synthesis and secretion, resulting in a decrease in testosterone and oestrogen production.
