Going commando
Triathlon Chick and I had a hallway conversation one day, she asked "do you wear your swimsuit on your run?" Me - "no man, I wear tri shorts". Her - "ya, you know my suit chafes". Me - "that's why you have to go commando! Go commando!" At this point, others who overheard have erupted in laughter. There's a saying, "nothing new on race day". Everything you wear has to be something you've trained in. Again, common sense. That's why in theatre, you have full-fucking-dress-rehearsals. I came close to breaking this rule when I bought my racer, 4 weeks is technically not enough time to get used to a brand new piece of equipment. She's like a race horse, hair trigger sensitivity and all. The first time I rode her, I couldn't U-turn and had to get off! I bought the saddle 2 weeks to race day, had to break that in too. Again, best purchase decisions with no regrets. I decided I wasn't going to learn to ride with clip pedals, a very wise decision in hindsight. Back to the going commando... Invest in a decent pair of tri shorts. Tyr is the brand of choice, but once again, my design dilemma rears its ugly (or stylish?) head. Mine are from 2XU. These are fancy pants in its truest form. The high end ones boast of supreme compression that "reduces lactic acid build up, speeding muscle recovery". They run about $150. For 9" shorts. Seriously, at my level, it's not gonna make a darn bit of difference. A good pair of shorts have light padding and dries quickly, which mine does. Mine also has a pocket, which comes in handy on weekly runs. You have to feel comfortable swimming, biking and then running. In the same pair of shorts. It should not chafe at any contact points. Now is also the time I tell you about Glide, a body "lubricant", for chafing. Let's just say I bought a good pair of shorts and don't have to use it below my waist, thank the heavens. If you have to swim in the shorts, then naturally, you have to go commando.
