Here's the final costumes for my designs of Rubella and Tristis from "Child of Light" that I made. The costumes in the white-background photographs aren't properly finished, as can be seen by the lack of hats and shoes, but this was as far as I could get before the photo shoot had to happen. Since one character is joyful and the other is depressed, I decided to ask my models to do a "Joy and Sadness"-like pose from the movie "Inside Out". The last photo is of my year’s costume showcase, displaying our final costumes for all to see.
Both of the costumes are entirely hand-painted, right down to the colour of the fabric, using a mixture of liquid watercolour paint and fabric medium; because I wanted to keep the storybook aesthetic of the original game. This meant that preparation took a very long time, as I had to paint onto wet fabric, let the fabric air dry, heat set the colour into the fabric, then wash the fabric to get rid of the stiffness caused by the excess paint, and then repeat the process for a second time; and this was just for the main colouring of the costumes. And I also tried my best to design the costumes to be similar enough to each other that they are obviously a pair, but different enough that they contrast each character's mental state. So, Rubella's costume is shorter than Tristis and has more bulk in the pants and sleeves, while Tristis' costume isn't fastened at the front and has painted buttons missing. Among many other details that display their personality through their costumes.
translation without rhyme: 1. — Smile brother! — Please cry my sister Rubella 2. — ... my people are Wiser than an owl, More cunning than a fox! — Robert, you are not a mouse. You are a rat!
