I’ve been thinking about your “anti-lore” post all weekend, it really resonated with me as another content creator. Do you have any particular creative reasons for feeling that way? I can imagine why (characters wont be preoccupied with it, halting the creation process, ect), but I am more interested in hearing your thoughts if you feel like typing them up.
well the Origin of that feeling goes back as far as 2012/2013, when i was starting and working on the defunct version of never satisfied and did a frankly absurd amount of worldbuilding that culminated in Nothing and only complicated things. it was fun to talk about and get asked about, but i didnt do anything with the majority of it, and it complicated how i was writing the story. i was more concerned with showing the world and using the concepts than i was with what mattered, ie the character development.
and you can see how, by cutting that out of my creative process, the characters in NS come fully to the front, and the world falls into the back where it belongs. yes they’re shaped by the world they live in, but the world is moreso shaped by them, and what i need of it to suit them and their arcs. then it’s only a matter of remembering what i already said and not contradicting it. i won’t be beholden to things i say or come up with outside of the comic, only what’s in the text.
with writing, like my two lil books, it’s pretty similar. i don’t include what i don’t need in that very moment, but i keep track of what i decide. it’s a much more natural, much less stressful way of creating “lore”.
why name the king if he’s only called the king, yknow?
