Cute little Trogossitid caught in the lab! Temnoscheila sp. ID’d by @cnestus
[PHOTOS TAKEN: MAY 31ST, 2024 | Image IDs: Four photos of a metallic green, practically blue in places, Temnoscheila bark-gnawing beetle on the inside of a dirty black, plastic wheelbarrow, the latter two also containing a black and brown millipede /End IDs.]
Temnoscheila chlorodia (Coleoptera: Trogossitidae), collected in Coronado National Forest, AZ.
bathroom pet of the day: this lovely green trogossitid (Temnoscheila chlorodia), a predator of bark beetles in conifer trees, found on the floor of the 4th floor men’s room of my lab building, many miles from any significant conifer population. a sign or omen, perhaps? the haruspices must be alerted...
#3375 - Fam. Trogossitidae - Bark-gnawing Beetles
The WA Gould Society held a event at the Herdsman Lake Discovery Centre, in Perth's northern suburbs, and invited environment groups from all over Perth to run tables and promote themselves. The WA Insects Study Society was one such, and this beetle grub fell out of the tree we were set underneath.
Trogossitids are a small family related to the Clerids, but it's smaller now than it was before 2019 when a third of the species got shuffled of to other families. Some 400 remain.
Both larvae and adults are either predators or fungivores, and are usually found on or in bark.
