Troy DeShano - The Best Decisions Rarely Make Sense on Paper (by Weapons of Mass Creation)

"We spend so much energy developing streamlined plans for realizing our most valued goals, whether they be personal, business, or artistic. Our strategies to make it big, change the world, be known, or retire young—however well researched and analyzed—often fall flat to the unpredictable nature of life. In this session I'll share a few of the big curveballs life's thrown my way, how I've managed to find joy in the small things, and in the face of death discovered my greatest fears can be faced boldly when ignoring the voice of reason."
After battling cancer throughout his twenties, Troy created Strong Odors to share his story through both writing and illustration. Through he's discovered that many others identify with his struggle in some way and also take great pleasure or pride (or something) from each of life's experiences—no matter how large or small, putrid or pungent."
Troy partnered with Jim LePage in 2011 to create Old & New Project, a growing collection of biblical stories retold for contemporary web readers—featuring artwork from respected international graphic artists and illustrators (including many WMC Fest alumni). Along with co-managing the project, Troy also fills the role of head writer, whittling dozens of ancient Old & New Testament tales into a few paragraphs any reader can appreciate, regardless of their personal views on religion.
Troy's fine art work currently focuses on mixed media paintings inspired by pop culture and created with found materials—channeling the resourcefulness he's inherited from a long line of Michigan farmers.
Above and beyond any of that, Troy is proud to be celebrating 14 years of marriage (all to the same person) and 29 collective years of parenting.
