To be clear, Jack's not in a habit of picking up strange women on the side of the road. Especially not when he's working - hell, when he's on a work haul, he doesn't like stopping much at all, let alone for hitch-hikers. But he couldn't leave you there.
He'd been putting up his window covers, ready to hunker down in the sleeper cabin for the night when he heard you screaming. You were bursting out of some guy's car, swinging a carabiner covered in key chains like a Hello Kitty themed cat-o'-nine. He hadn't stopped to think. He'd just seen that guy grabbing you by the hair, heard you screaming for help, caught your eye with his and knew he couldn't just turn away.
"Seriously, what was the plan?" He asks you, dry as a bone, as he picks gravel out of the gash on your forearm. "Wander into some random guy's car and what, pray he wasn't an axe-murderer?"
"Worked with you, didn't it?" You smile wryly. Jack shoots you a flat glare.
"Charm can get you a lot of places, but it can't get you out of human trafficking."
"All I'm hearing is you think I'm charming," you wink.
He rolls his eyes, because you deserve it. But he warns you before he puts on the antiseptic, because you don't deserve that. And then, because he loses all sense of self-preservation after 12am-
"Where're you headed?"
"Where're you going?"
Jack frowns.
"I asked you first."
"And here I thought they didn't let children drive-"
"Virginia," Jack mutters, because he gets the feeling you're someone who never lets things be easy. "Shenandoah Valley. That on your way, or...?"
"Wouldn't ya know it," you grin, like this is a joke the two of you are sharing, even though Jack's not too sure he gets it. "That is smack in the dab of where I'm headed! Don't you love it when that happens?"
Despite his best efforts, he can't help cracking a smile.
"Just serendipitous." He fastens the bandage around your cut up arm. "I can get you to Jefferson County. No return trips."
Barely a second passes before you're saying, "Deal."
