It really pisses me off when people say the Undertones 'aren't punk' - clearly they are just missing the whole point of the culture itself. So they didn't necessarily make songs that were about politics or war or social issues, or that sounded as 'hard' and angry as other punk stuff, but that doesn't mean they weren't punk. Punk can't be defined by a list of rules and boxes that bands have to tick. If anything, they were more punk, living in Northern Ireland in the 70s/80s and having real, serious shit to rebel against. By choosing to write upbeat songs about everyday stuff like their annoying cousins, they refused to let all the horrible shit happening around them dictate their art, and provided an escape for people dealing with the same situation. They did whatever the fuck they wanted, and created some excellent music in the process. To me, they are true punks.
