Imomali Turdiev

Imomali Turdiev is a warehouse worker and native of Tajikistan who became the centre of a high-profile legal case in Russia following a fatal confrontation in early 2026.

The Incident: Turdiev was involved in a physical altercation on a bus with a group of young men. Video footage from the scene reportedly showed the group making obscene gestures and violating public order.

Legal Charges: He was arrested and charged with murder following the death of one of the individuals involved in the fight. Turdiev has stated he acted in a "state of shock".

Public and Legal Defence: His case has sparked significant debate, particularly in Tajikistan. Supporters and legal advocates, such as those cited, argue that he acted without criminal intent and in defence of others.

Some reports suggest the group he confronted may have had links to neo-Nazi organisations.

The case is often cited as an example of the complex legal and social challenges faced by Central Asian migrants in Russia, highlighting discrepancies in how crimes involving migrants are reported and prosecuted.

Muhammad Yutaev

Muhammad (Mohmad) Yutaev (1980– 1999) was a young Chechen fighter who became a symbol of resistance during the First and Second Chechen Wars.

He joined the Chechen militia as a teenager (around age 14 or 15) to fight against the Russian invasion that began in late 1994.

Despite his young age, he participated in significant events, including: The 1995 Budyonnovsk hospital hostage crisis (led by Shamil Basayev). The 1996 Operation Jihad, which led to the Chechen forces reclaiming Grozny.

He became a well-known figure in Chechnya after a 1996 television interview highlighted his "audacity" and "courage" as a teenage soldier.

During the start of the Second Chechen War in late 1999, Yutaev was captured by Russian forces. It is widely believed he died in captivity at approximately 18 or 19 years old due to torture. Because his body was never recovered, he is sometimes listed as a missing person. Among Chechen independence supporters, he is regarded as a martyr (shahid) and a symbol of his generation's sacrifices.

The Bomber who was stopped with a hug

In January 2023, a terrorist plot was thwarted by Nathan Newby, an "extraordinary, ordinary man" who literally hugged the would-be bomber to calm him down.

Nathan Newby, then 35, was a patient at St James’s Hospital in Leeds being treated for a chest infection. He stepped outside for a vape in the early hours of 20 January and noticed Mohammad Farooq acting agitated and "fidgeting" outside the maternity ward.

Instead of running, Newby approached Farooq to see if he was alright and "try to cheer him up".

About an hour into their conversation, Farooq revealed he had a pressure cooker bomb packed with 10kg of explosives and intended to "kill as many nurses as possible".

During their two-hour conversation, Farooq asked for a "cuddle" several times. Newby complied, later saying, "Yes, have a hug mate," to keep him calm and humanise the situation. After the final hug, Farooq told Newby, "I want you to phone the police before I change my mind".

On 25 March 2026, Nathan Newby was presented with a George medal by King Charles III at St James' Palace. This is the UK's second-highest civilian gallantry award.

Mohammad Farooq, described as a "self-radicalised lone-wolf terrorist," was sentenced on 21 March 2025 to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 37 years.

Authorities stated that the bomb was "double the size" of those used in the Boston Marathon attack. The hospital staff later chipped in to buy Newby the suit he wore to meet the King as a gesture of gratitude.

Aaron Hernandez

Aaron Hernandez was a prominent NFL tight end for the New England Patriots whose career ended abruptly following his arrest and subsequent conviction for first-degree murder.

In three seasons, he recorded 175 receptions for 1,956 yards and 18 touchdowns. He scored a touchdown in Super Bowl and signed a five-year, $40 million contract extension in 2012, which included a $12.5 million signing bonus.

In June 2013, Hernandez was arrested for the murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro player dating his fiancée's sister. He was immediately released by the Patriots and later found guilty in 2015, receiving a life sentence without parole. While imprisoned, he was tried for the 2012 drive-by shooting deaths of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado in Boston. He was acquitted of these murder charges on 14 April 2017, though convicted of a related weapons charge.

He faced multiple civil actions, including a lawsuit from Alexander Bradley, who claimed Hernandez shot him in the face in 2013.

He killed himself on 19 April 2017, five days after his double-homicide acquittal. Hernandez was found dead in his prison cell. His death was ruled a suicide by hanging.

Experts described it as the most advanced case ever seen in a person his age (27), leading to significant debate over how the brain damage may have influenced his violent behavior.
