For the young artists filling up my inbox with questions on how to shade with ink, here are some tips: Firstly, shading is essentially the same with any medium, it's all about layering. For example, how many layers do you need to achieve the specific color you want? Practice with making a key of at least 10 different shades, and continue to expand that key. I will post mine later to give an example. Also, for artists experimenting with ink pens; think about how hard you're pressing your pen against the paper, and think about the way you hold the pen whether it is at an angle (which depending on how you hold it, it allows you to have a little bit more control).
