Awoken language, aka I'm geekin out about the first step of the Truth quest
The scrap of paper you find, it says its a note written in Awoken script. But before this, to the best of my knowledge, there'd been no obvious reference to the Awoken having their own language. They'd always spoken whatever we did.
So, the Awoken have their own language, at the very least their own written one. What is it? How did it come to be? Do they still speak it?
When I was typing this up I suddenly remembered a line from Petra, in the beginning of the Corrupted strike:
When I hears these lines, I assumed that Techeun was a title, and "tech witches" was more of what their functional role was. Now I wonder if Petra was actually translating, and "Techeun" is an old Awoken word.
If it is, that makes me think that Awoken may be an offchute of English. Think: a colony ship of mostly English-speaking humans gets sucked into a singularity, creating the Awoken. They exist in a vaccuum for hundreds of years, given their language plenty of time to change and grow into something that only barely resembles English anymore. Think Old English vs modern english.
(Note please that I dont assume they spoke English for any reason except I speak English and own an English copy of Destiny.)
Back to the note, real quick. Petra translates it, then notes that it reads specifically like it was already translated from Eliksni. This is a little tidbit that shows that Eliksni has an apparently quite distinct grammar or syntax structure that allowed Petra to realize.
