'Truth Zone' by Simon Hanselmann
Here's one we yanked off the shelf during the photoshoot; a comic that will truly only appeal to the most hardened of comic book geek, the most stalwart of hipsters, the most hopeless and jaded of art school rejects. I'm almost ashamed to admit how much I dug this comic because with that laughter came the embarrassing realization that I'm a total fanboy. Oh well, at least I'm not going to comic book conventions dressed in an oversized felt and pipe cleaner cosplay as C.F. or something.
This thing is way better as a comics review than I could ever supply, a hilarious roast of comics creators and some good jabs at the culture and fans that surround the scene. Having a seance for Pete Bagge and then realizing he's not dead, but thinking he is because they didn't know he's still producing work oh man what a zinger. Back in high school I eagerly waited for each new issue of Hate, reading and re-reading them over again and then slowly drifted away as the post Hate stuff spoke less and less to my experiences or to things I cared about. Dont' get me wrong, the dude still rocks in my book but that strip was a perfect little summation of the experience.
And oh man that strip depicting when they go to a comic book store!! I am exactly like Owl when in a comic book store, I believe I have said all those exact things word for word. When I go to a comic book store I get so stressed and pissed off when confronted by just how intense fan culture is. When I worked as a caricaturist at an amusement park I worked with grown men who didn't read the comics, they just collected the merchandise!! Mountains of toys, lunch boxes, posters, anything but the actual comic books!! People fall for this shit?!?! And I felt shame at myself for behaving like owl every time I go into a comic store because who gives a shit, at least those kids are having fun and finding a community. I come from the day when no one read that shit and it was generally a given that you were a maladjusted fuck if you read comic books, I'm probably just jealous. Its all good, I go to a comic book store once a year at best so I'm cooler than all those kids anyway.
The book itself is just about as hand made as you can get it. None of the pages are printed on both sides, its just a stack of photocopied pages with duct tape for binding, why does this kind of stuff give me a boner?
The book is a fun little glimpse into this corner world of self published artsy fartsy mini comics that I like to follow, hanselmann says out loud a lot of things I've always thought or wondered about the scene or its creators. Thats' one of his real gifts as an author, like reading Pete Bagge or Clowes back in the day and feeling so connected to the books and that it spoke to my generation so doth Hanselmann pick up the torch and speak to all of us now that we are grown up; jaded, burnt out, reflective of our past mistakes and triumphs, jaded. Its all good, though, back then I was a loner kid reading weird books all by myself and now I'm a grown up who hangs out around naked people all day.
And best part was that this little handmade book turned me onto the fact that there are tons of comics on the internet now. I am just as late to the party as I could possibly be when it comes to following shit on tumblr and such. Sorry, I've been touring in bands and living on farms and getting fucked and getting fucked up and missed out on the whole internet thing. This comic is definitely a direct link to me creating this blog, which is an experiment in trying to find more comics out there, so thanks for that Truth Zone. Thanks to everyone who's sent me stuff so far and thanks to many of my followers who are turning me on to the stuff out there. I'm a little scared by how much content people put up online for free and how many people readily consume it without giving anything back but thats a rambling I can hold off on for now.
New Simon Hanselmann additions to my collection: a page from Simon's Mould Map 3 story titled "The Non-Boner Page," an illustration of Megg on vacation in France, and a Santororiffic episode of Truth Zone.
Where can I buy the Truth Zone collection?
