You guys probably didn't even notice I was gone. Well, I was. But while I was away, I went and got myself a Spotify account and now I'm back to barrage your newsfeeds with one great, obscure track after another. So for those of you who have been itching for something new to listen to, read on...
The first track of the night is a number by little known Swedish songwriter, producer and artist Daniel Gidlund. He's pretty low-key, with a mere 1096 likes on his Facebook page, but if fan following were considered any indication of artistic capability, then Taylor Swift would be considered a veritable musical genius. My point being, while the rest of the world has been blasting "Blank Space" out their car stereos as loud as they possibly can, I've been taking a somewhat calmer, smoother musical avenue through Gidlund's latest class offering "Try Happiness".
The track begins with slow, acoustic strums, punctuated only by Gidlund's deep, throaty vocals as he begins to croon "I carried you around tonight". Ever so smoothly, the track begins to build up to it's chorus-verse, interspersing his acoustic guitar with only the most base of clapping sounds, probably pulled off with the help of an electric keyboard. As the song builds to its crescendo, you feel almost instantly lighter as Gidlund's voice urges to "go, go, go, (you should) try happiness...". It's utterly simplistic in its lyrical intent and instrumentation, assisted only by the joint capacity of his skills as a lyricist, his guitar, keyboard and some bass and percussion. It's not a complex equation, by any means, but it works and even though it's not going to be the most out-there track you've heard lately, take my word for it and just hit the play button.
