WELLNESS WEDNESDAY | WELL ROOM IV THERAPY

Starting a new business and a pandemic don’t exactly go hand-in-hand. But when Megan Kingdon decided to launch her long-time dream, Well Room, she never could have imagined a situation in which the world was completely shut down. But alas, that’s where she found herself this past March. Now, as we’ve eased into Stage 2 restrictions, Megan had her opening on June 10th and frankly, her services couldn’t come at a better time.

Well Room is a much-needed oasis in Charlottesville, offering IV therapy, infrared sauna, cryotherapy, spray tan, wellness coaching, and a lovely functional market and apothecary. In short, all the things for clean wellness that refresh and revitalize.

Last week I made an appointment with Megan for an IV infusion. I have long heard of this treatment outside of a strictly medical setting (and most certainly needed it the mornings after I’ve been “overserved”), but had never tried it before. I fully admit that I’m not a big fan of needles, but I had nothing to worry about under Megan’s gentle and capable hands.

What We’re Doing // Amanda Beckwith from Virginia Distillery Company

In our latest installment, we caught up with Amanda Beckwith, guest experience & education manager at Virginia Distillery Company. Here she shares how they’re adapting and what she’s doing at home to maintain a sense of normalcy. 

WHAT VIRGINIA DISTILLERY CO. IS DOING We’ve closed The Visitors Center in Lovingston to allow for safe social distancing, but our team is moving forward in all markets with the national launch of our flagship American Single Malt Whisky Courage & Conviction (available now in select Virginia ABC stores and online!) and we’ve turned our production focus to hand sanitizer for the time being to assist those on the front lines.

Our website has details on where to find our whisky, as a well as a number of cocktail recipes well-suited for quarantine.

WHAT AMANDA IS DOING  I am reading: As a book fanatic, any extra time means a chance to crack open a book. I'm currently reading The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden and The Curious Bartender: An Odyssey of Malt, Bourbon & Rye Whiskies by Tristan Stephenson.

Podcasts I’m listening to: I travel frequently, so three of my favorite podcasts to make the miles fly by are LeVar Burton Reads, Critical Role and Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History. 

Series I’m binge watching: I recently inhaled The Watchmen and The Witcher, so now it’s more of an occasional old episode of Star Trek TNG or The Great British Baking Show while I wait for the next season of The Mandalorian. 

Songs / playlists I’m listening to: I’ve been listening to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald, David Bowie and First Aid Kit. Colors by Black Pumas and River by Bishop Briggs were two favorites from this morning’s playlist.

Recipes I’m trying: Last night’s cravings meant tacos had to happen, but I’ve been trying to stay healthy with some creative salads. The warmer weather has me breaking out my blender for smoothies with ingredients like bananas, cherries, and chocolate. 

I also love to bake, and recently made a massive batch of chocolate cherry cookies (with a hint of whisky, of course). 

Ways I’m keeping the pups (and friend’s kids) entertained: I’ve been fostering a dog for a little while and the bubble machine on the back patio has been a huge success. I think my friends have been using FaceTime with me as a way to keep their kids entertained. I certainly haven’t minded. 

Games I’m enjoying: Thanks to Discord and Roll20, I’ve been playing D&D online with my friends. It’s a fantastic way to stay in touch and fit in some healthy escapism every week.

Tasks I’m finally tackling around home: After a round of general spring cleaning, I’ve begun reorganizing my closets and creating a donation pile. My next project is finding a better way to store my loose leaf tea collection that now dominates an entire shelf in my pantry. 

My home workspace set up: My living room and dining table both double as an office space, but the sunshine and warmer weather on the way means that my patio table will likely soon become my new desk. Whenever I’m done with work for the day, I make a point of packing up my work items to transition away until the fresh start of the following morning. 

My personal immunity / health regimen: I’ve always been a frequent hand washer and a fan of the fruits and veggies, so I had a good foundation to build on. Doing my part to not spread the virus has meant giving up a lot of social interactions, but there was no doubt it was the right thing to do. Having a dog around has gotten me quite a few miles in that I wouldn’t normally be logging, and a quick yoga session in the morning is another favorite way to start a day strong.

Financial Assistance Summary

Here we go! This is our best attempt at summarizing what we understand about the current SBA loan programs. Just keep in mind, as much as we want to help small businesses access financial assistance, we want to be very clear that we aren’t banking experts at all, and we want to stress that you should contact your financial institution and/or your accountant for professional advice on how to proceed.

These SBA loans are administered by institutions that are approved by the SBA.Contact your banking institution first to see if they administer SBA loans. You will apply online, but with an individual financial institution, not the SBA directly.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS TO BUSINESSES FOUND IN THE CARES ACT:

1) The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), (part of the 7(a) Loan Expansion):

The purpose of this loan program is to help businesses retain their employees at current compensation levels with low-interest - and potentially forgivable - SBA loans that they can use to cover payroll costs for their workforce as well as other operational costs such as rent, interest on mortgage obligations and utilities.

Sole proprietors and independent contractors are eligible to apply for these loans as ‘self-employed individuals’.

Sole proprietors would use IRS filings and Profit and Loss statements to support their eligibility claims. Franchises are specifically included in the Act. The interest rate for a covered loan is not to exceed 4%. You can apply for forgiveness on the loan in an amount that is equal to the amount spent during an 8-week period after the origination date of the loan on eligible expenses.  

2) SBA Express Loan - Repayable Loan:

Eligible businesses can be granted up to $350,000 of capital in the form of either a term loan or line of credit. Fast turnaround time for an approval. The interest rate is negotiated but cannot exceed the SBA maximum.

3) Emergency Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) - Repayable Loan:

The Act expands eligibility for access to Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) to include any individual operating as a sole proprietor or an independent contractor during the covered period (January 31, 2020 to December 31, 2020). The Act requires that for any SBA EIDL loans made in response to COVID-19 before December 31, 2020, the SBA shall waive any personal guarantee on advances and loans below $200,000, the requirement that an applicant needs to have been in business for the 1-year period before the disaster, and the ‘credit elsewhere’ requirement.

4) Deferment of Employer Payroll Taxes:

This provision of the Act allows employers to defer payment of the employer-share of Social Security and Medicare taxes due from March 27 to December 31, 2020. Half of the tax will be due Dec. 31, 2021 and the other half will not be due until Dec. 31, 2022. (This doesn’t apply to the amounts withheld from employees).

This benefit also applies to self-employed individuals, allowing them to defer half of their self-employment tax on the same schedule. However, if you have had debt forgiven under either the PPP or the US Treasury Program Mgt. Authority, you are excluded from this deferment.

5) Emergency Grant Payment Distributions:

These grants allow an eligible entity who has applied for an EIDL loan due to COVID-19 to request an advance on that loan, of not more than $10,000, which the SBA must distribute within three days. Applicants shall not be required to repay advance payments, even if subsequently denied for an EIDL loan. Advance payment may be used for providing paid sick leave to employees, maintaining payroll, meeting increased costs to obtain materials, making rent or mortgage payments, and repaying obligations that cannot be met due to revenue losses. Further, the Act requires that an advance payment be considered when determining loan forgiveness, if the applicant transfers into a loan made under SBA’s Paycheck Protection Program. (In other words, we think that if you get this $10K advance, that it reduces your PPP grant by the same amount.)

6) Multiple Modifications to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) enacted in late 2017:

There are important tax changes in the CARES Act that very possibly affect your business, and we have included a link to our auditor’s website that addresses these modifications which can get you started in a review that you would continue with your tax preparer. Suffice to say that these changes may potentially allow you to receive a refund of taxes paid in previous years.

7) Employee Retention Credits:

If you have employees, the CARES Act provides for a refundable credit against payroll taxes for 50% of wages paid from March 13, 2020, to December 31, 2020, up to $10,000 per employee if the employer has a quarter that falls 50% or less in gross receipts below the same quarter last year.

8) FYI on Unemployment:

We know that very few of our franchisees have employees, but here is a summary of some of the temporary changes to unemployment insurance enacted through the Act. A temporary Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program was established through December 31, 2020, to provide payment to those not traditionally eligible for unemployment benefits (self-employed, independent contractors, those with limited work history and others) who are unable to work as a direct result of the coronavirus public health emergency.

We do not, at the current time, know how a self-employed individual would provide documentation on employment.

The Act provides for an additional $600 per week payment to each recipient of unemployment insurance or Pandemic Unemployment Assistance for up to four months - in addition to state unemployment compensation and irrespective of how much the laid off employee is making when they were laid off. It also provides an additional 13 weeks of unemployment benefits through December 31, 2020, to help those who remain unemployed after weeks of state unemployment benefits are no longer available.                                          

APPLYING FOR AN SBA LOAN

PPP loans will be made by SBA-approved lenders, like a bank, and you will apply directly to them. SBA is expected to issue guidance to lenders, including details on how to apply and the criteria SBA will use to determine who will receive loans by April 11 (15 days from signing of the Act), although it may be issued sooner.

Because there is going to be an avalanche of businesses applying for these loans, you should start assembling documentation now to expedite the application process. This is not a comprehensive list, but we suggest getting these items together now so you are ready to apply. Be sure to have all documents in a digital format. All of these documents may not be requested.

Since these loans are SBA 7(a) loans, the forms that you will have to fill out will be similar to SBA Form 1919, so review that form at this time;

Articles of incorporation/organization;

Bylaws/operating agreement;

Documentation verifying payments on mortgage obligations, lease payments and utility payments;

Payroll expense verification documents, including IRS Forms 941 and 944, payroll summary reports and bank statements, summary of payroll benefits;

Trailing twelve-month profit and loss statement, and complete 2019 financials (P&L and Balance Sheet);

Utility statements;

Most recent IRS Form 941 (quarterly Federal Income tax return);

January 2019 through February 2020 payroll expenses;

You may need your business license;  

Prior year taxes, if they are complete. If 2019 taxes are not complete, then have 2018 taxes ready in a digital format.

As a reminder, we are not professionals in the finance industry, nor experts on SBA loans, so as we said before, please seek the advice of a professional when making your applications or if you have questions.

Head on out to Festival of the Home at IX park on Saturday, June 1 from 10am-3pm. This one-day festival is designed to provide a one-stop-shop for all things home. VISIT

Second Street Gallery is pleased to present its first exhibition honoring one of the principal figures of the second generation of Abstract Expressionism in Lady Painters: Inspired by Joan Mitchell. The show will be held June 7 to July 19 in the Main Gallery. Joan Mitchell is recognized as one of the most significant artists in Post-War American Art and this exhibition will examine the lasting influence she’s had on women artists who continue to work in the abstract expressionist style of painting. Artists participating in the exhibition include: Isabelle Abbot, Karen Blair, Janet Bruce, and Priscilla Long Whitlock of Virginia, as well as Molly Herman, a native of Alexandria, Virginia who now lives and works in New York City. The highlight of the exhibition will be the inclusion of two rarely seen original works of art by Joan Mitchell, on loan to Second Street Gallery from The Fralin Museum at the University of Virginia.

There's a new restaurant in town. Check out Mochiko at The Yard at 5th Street Station (the Wegman’s shopping center). This  locally-owned deli and grill, brainchild of Hawaii native Ricki Tanabe, is dedicated to bringing good Hawaiian eats and the Aloha spirit to Charlottesville. Mochiko has developed a faithful foodie following from their booth at the City Market, and now they are bringing their good Hawaiian dishes to the masses via a brick and mortar restaurant. Their signature dish, Mochiko Chicken, is comprised of nuggets of dark meat chicken marinated in garlic, ginger, soy, and mochiko (rice) flour, then deep fried to perfection. But they also serve sushi rolls, poke rolls, veggie rolls, teri beef kimbap, and more! Right now they are having a soft opening, and will be open every Tuesday through Sunday from 5-8pm, but after their grand opening later in June their menu and times will expand.

Experience Aboriginal art.  The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection at UVa has a wonderful new exhibit, Shane Pickett: Djinong Djina Boodja (Look at the Land That I have Traveled). If you’re not familiar with them The Kluge-Ruhe, it is the , only museum outside of Australia dedicated to the exhibition and study of Indigenous Australian art and well worth the drive out to Pantops to view their collection. During Shane Pickett’s lifetime (1957-2010), he  was acclaimed as one of Western Australia’s most significant contemporary Aboriginal artists. Featuring 10 works from the most radical phase of his career, Djinong Djina Boodja (Look at the Land That I Have Traveled) is the first major exhibition of Pickett’s work in the US. Pickett’s paintings capture the transformations of the country near Perth in the southwest of Australia in ever-changing and innovative ways. Over the course of his three-decade career, Pickett developed a new visual language to represent the cornerstones of the culture of his Nyoongar people: the pathways of ancestors, traditional healing practices and places, and especially the six seasons used by Nyoongar people to divide the year. The exhibit is on view through September 8.

The new meditation: mindful knitting. If you’re just not the type who is going to park it on a cushion and get zen for 20 minutes, then knitting might be just the thing for you. An article in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday heralded knitting as the perfect activity for those of us who need a little self-control with putting down our phones and zoning out. Reinvent date night. If your Friday night date routine consists of drinks and dinner —  and it’s getting a little tired — then it’s time to mix things up. Every Friday night Blue Light Ballroom hosts two basics classes at 7:30pm and 8:15pm, followed by a dance party at 9:00pm. No experience or registration needed. Up this week is Five 100 Proof Band.  Inspired by many music genres, 100 Proof Band brings together an array of local musicians that collectively blend a broad range of music — funk, R&B, jazz and neo soul — to produce one unique sound.
