Fic reccomendations and a writer´s ramblings
I was absent from this fandom for a long time, and of course I missed a lot of good stories that were published during that period. I’m still catching up, and organizing these themed lists has been helping me a lot.
I was blown away by two stories I read this week, both AUs:
A Woman of About Thirty-Six, by INeverExplainAnything (honeynymph) — I’m still hoping the author will finish it one day.
Both were lessons in fanfiction writing for me, even though they are completely different in style. The second one actually set my mind at ease about something I’ve been wondering: whether it would be all right to use an obscure novel I read long ago as inspiration and a starting point for an AU fic. Its plot has stayed with me ever since I read it, and it took me years to track down that book so that I could buy it. The author of A Woman of About Thirty-Six was inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca (one of my favorite novels, by the way), and she did such a brilliant job adapting it to the TSOM world… or was it the other way around?
Maybe I’ll try the same with my obscure gothic novel. No, I won’t reveal the title just yet — I’ll keep it to myself for a while.
