Candlelight flickered dimly from the old dented holders, casting warm light across the tabletop. It just barely caught the side of Dís’ face as she sat across from him, her head tilted to the side to keep an eye on Fili and Kili as they scarfed down their dinner.
It was a poor imitation of the Yule feast Thorin remembered from years long past as a child in Erebor, but the boys seemed to enjoy it all the same. The roast that sat in the middle of the table was the result of many long days tracking and hunting the few animals that dared come this close to Ered Luin, and Thorin thought it was well worth all of the work just to see Fili and Kili’s eyes light up when their mother took it out of the icebox that morning.
They had waited all afternoon as it roasted, bounding around the kitchen and pestering every five or so minutes, asking when the roast would finally be done. Thorin found it endearing, not that he’d ever admit it, and he knew his sister felt the same, even as she snapped at them to sit down and settle for what felt like the 50th time that day.
Thorin let out a long sigh, the corners of his mouth turning up in a small, hidden smile as Kili scrunched up his face and flicked a glob of mashed potato at Fili. The clump of potato landed squarely in Fili’s hair, and Thorin had never seen a child look more disgusted than Fili did in that moment. If one of them didn’t step in soon, they might --
“ Boys.” Dís warned, her tone final and commanding. Both Fili and Kili stopped in their tracks, looked at each other, then to their mother, and quietly went back to eating their dinner.
Thorin huffed out a soft laugh, smiling as a warm content filled his chest for the first time in a long while.
