DAY 8 - for @tsttoain, who requested #23 "I hate it when you do that" for Vegaspete, post canon and not (too) angsty with a happy ending.

“Macau wants to go to university in London,” Vegas told Pete one evening, chopping chillies while Pete set the dinner table. “He made me a whole sales pitch this afternoon.”

"He did?” Pete asked, smiling as he filled a jug with water and ice.

“Yeah. He’s researched accommodation, made a breakdown of costs, found out how to apply for a student visa - he even made a presentation on his laptop. I was impressed.”

“What did you say?”

“That I’d talk to you,” Vegas said, stirring the sliced chillies into the pan. “But I’m inclined to agree, once I’ve looked into it myself to be sure.”

“That’s great,” Pete said, taking cutlery and napkins from the drawer. “It would be good for him to get away from here, I think. Make a future that’s just his.”

Vegas nodded. “It would. And he needs to learn how to be self-sufficient, I’ve always done too much for him. Who knows how much longer he’ll have me to lean on.”

There was a clatter of metal on wood, and Vegas spun around to see Pete slamming down the silverware he’d been laying out.

“Pete?” Vegas asked uncertainly.

“I hate it when you do that!” Pete exclaimed.

Vegas frowned. “Do what?”

“Talk like you don’t have a future,” Pete said, anger clear on his face. “Like we don’t have a future.”

“I didn’t mean anything like that,” Vegas said, “but now that I’m working with Porsche, there’s more risk of something happening to me. We need to be realistic about that.”

Pete took a deep breath, huffed it out. “I know that, we’ve talked about it enough times. But since we don’t know what’s going to happen, I’d rather not think about you dying when I just got you back!”

Vegas could see the anguish behind the anger, and his heart twisted. He turned off the heat and went to Pete, stroking gently down one arm. “Hey, I didn’t mean to upset you.”

“I know that too,” Pete said, “and I understand why you think that way. I just…I guess today I didn’t want to hear it.”

Vegas tucked a finger under Pete’s chin, waited for him to meet his gaze. “I’m sorry,” he said softly. “I’m not actually planning on going anywhere, you know.”

“Good,” Pete said grumpily, but his demeanour began to thaw. “As if I’d let you go, anyway.”

Vegas smiled. “I like it when you get possessive.”

Pete couldn’t suppress a smile in return. “Makes a nice change from you doing it.”

Vegas tightened his grip just a little, saw the spark in Pete’s eyes. “I’m not possessive,” he said, low and deep. “You just need to understand that you’re mine. That’s all.”

“I am,” Pete said, leaning into Vegas’s touch. “You know I am. All in, always.”

“All in, always,” Vegas echoed, leaning in to rest his forehead against Pete’s.

They stayed that way for a moment, until Pete’s hands gripped Vegas’s hips and he tilted his face back, and Vegas had no choice but to kiss him. Just as he got Pete’s shirt untucked, the front door slammed and a voice yelled, “Hia! Did you talk to Pete yet?”

Vegas sighed and withdrew his hands, leaving one draped around Pete’s waist. “I was just doing that now,” he called back.

Macau bounced around the corner into the kitchen, then paused and curled his top lip with a heartfelt, “Ew. Yeah, I can see exactly what you were just doing.”

“Brat,” Vegas said, pulling Pete closer.

“Perv,” Macau shot back, grinning at Vegas’s eye roll. “So…? What do you guys think about London?”

“I think,” Vegas said, pausing long enough for Macau to get antsy, “that it sounds like a great idea.”

“For real?” Macau squealed, his whole face lighting up along with Vegas’s heart. “Hia, you’re actually the best brother in the world, did you know that?”

“We need to talk details,” Vegas said, his warning tone belying the warmth in his chest, “but in theory, I’m okay with it.”

Macau hugged him, swaying them from side to side and opening an arm for Pete to snuggle in with them. “You too, Pete - thanks for being amazing.”

Pete laughed. “No problem. The presentation was what clinched it, and that was all you.”

“Yeah,” Macau said, stepping back, “but it was you who suggested the financial breakdown.”

Vegas’s eyes widened and he turned to Pete. “What? You were conspiring with the brat behind my back?”

Pete’s grin was wide and infectious; Vegas would fight the world for that smile. “Us brats have to stick together, right?”

“Ew again!” Macau said, sticking his fingers in his ears and walking backwards towards the doorway. “I’m too cool for this conversation.”

“Dinner’s in ten minutes,” Vegas called after his retreating form, then shook his head. “Unbelievable. Can you believe the attitude on that kid?”

“Yes,” Pete said flatly. “He’s exactly like you."

"Hey!"

"Which means he’s strong, and clever, and he’ll be just fine in London.”

“He will,” Vegas said, then grinned. “Just think, soon you and I will have the house to ourselves all the time.”

“And that means we’re going to be very busy,” Pete said, wrapping both arms around Vegas’s waist and pressing a kiss to the hinge of his jaw. “There are just too many surfaces in this house that you haven’t fucked me on yet.”

Vegas took Pete’s face in both hands and grinned. “Want to start changing that right now?”

I love everything I have read that you wrote, but my favorites are a pocket full of sunshine and the school newspaper au :) <3

i have such a soft spot for that tiny little newspaper au. @hoechlder always wanted me to write a million more words for it, and i feel bad that i probably never will.

pocketful of sunshine on the other hand will probably end up with the prom sequel in about ten years but it WILL GET A SEQUEL.

I think the reason that both july and august have 31 days is that they're named after julius cesar and augustus and whoever was the later one (augustus I think) didn't want to have less days in his month than the other one

What a delightful bit of Trivia - and based on what little I know of Roman rulers, that sounds 100% plausible to me. Thank you!

plot wise or character wise? Also totally unrelated who/where is your sidebar pic (from)?

both maybe? idk. i’ll get there. i watch too much reality tv not to figure it out eventually. i’m thinking not all the sh characters are contestants. maybe magnus is the presenter which makes it super awkward when alec and him hit it off. also luke is 100% the poor guy who’s job it is to look after the contestants.
