Bandtastic Weekend part 2- TUCBIDG!
Ah. Waking up at 6:20 on a Saturday morning. I'm not in a competition marching band so I don't get the early Saturday thing that some other Tumblr people do. Left Cleveland around 8:20, and got to a modest suburb of Cincinnati to check in to a hotel in the middle of a hotel cluster shortly after 1. I must say I'm mad I didn't see the amazing 3 story bookstore during this drive.
Ahh so this hotel- The beds are rock hard. I was sore from the long drive and the band picnic on Friday, so my instinct was to fall right onto the bed.
At least the TV has Cartoon Network.
So then we went over to Ruby Tuesdays for lunch. waiter was some kinda nervous kid but I'd probably be the same if I were a waiter. Ruby Tuesdays is kinda awesome. I haven't had a good cheeseburger in a while and OHHH YES the garlic biscuits.
And finally we get on campus. Hear drums already. The line was warming up outside of the band center for a good portion of our time fumbling around with parking and through our visit in the band office. The band center is very nice, I really like their band room, the building is three floors, with offices on the second. We had a few good discussions with some of the guys up there, got some questions answered, the director walked in and introduced himself.
And now for the first round of walking on campus. We did a LOT of walking. Over 11.000 steps clocked on Dudley's 3DS pedometer. Eventually we elected to simply follow the band as to not get lost. This is where we got up close with the tubas.
The UC tuba section is made of 16 chillaxed trolls. It's awesome. They march off to the side of parade block, sometimes cutting corners and whatnot. We followed by, thinking "This is cool."
Then they found some trees. Each line breaks off and circles a tree. They then snake back into position. It's hilarious and I'm reconsidering trying to audition on baritone because this sousaphone line is epic.
Pregame traditions include the catwalk and the concert at Sigma Sigma. The concert is kinda like skull session except outside and standing up. Being that close and listening to the fanfare kinda makes you realize that you're somewhere awesome. We got to our seats right away and waited for pregame.
The charge. AAAAHHHHH Gotta love the charge. Pregame at UC is never dull.
Stand tunes are kinda to be expected. 7 nation Army, Iron Man, Imperial March. Holy shit, they played Gold Digger. They could maybe use an arranger like me (but with more years experience) based on the first half's performance.
Hlaftime. The show was kept short due to some stupid thing where 400 area dancers and cheerleaders performed some stupid dance routine after some clinic with UC's dance and cheer teams that day. They fucking danced to Call Me Maybe. Is there any cheerleading squad that -hasn't- danced to call me maybe? Can that guy just fucking call her and tell her he doesn't like her already?? Also some frat had some ceremony on the field at halftime. Can't you people do this shit somewhere else? Or maybe before the pregame show or something?
but the halftime show- AWWW YISS. During the concert they played very well but at halftime it's balls to the wall. They did the score from Child of Sanchez and I respect and band that can play it, let alone march it. The articulation needed in that song is crazy.
They kept the energy 3rd and 4th quarter. UC won the game by a landslide. I was right next to the trumpet line during the alma mater and All I Do Is Win. Holy shit this trumpet screaming right in front of me. Bones and tubas goin ham also. As they were heading out some guy suddenly yelled "HI BOB!" At first I thought he was the g-men anon cause it seemed like he was trying to get my attention during the game but then I recognized him, He used to be on staff at summer camp. Funny how I run into a scout here.
After the game we got pizza, went back to the hotel, and passed out after Bleach and Samurai 7. Two of us set alarm for 6. I was deep in thought and then I hear Andreus shuffling around. "It's 7."
Every time I set a cell phone alarm at a hotel it never goes off. Why.
On the way back we stopped at this Wendy's and this scout trooped pulled up. One of the kids looks way too familiar. It's the kid that used to be a patrol leader at my troop before the scoutmaster threw a bitch fit and kicked out half of leadership. Ohai.
And now I'm back. I'll just lay here and be sore and dread that Monday is tomorrow. But at the same time I experienced the UC band and I'm very impressed. OSU tickets for next week, then I'll be sitting in with Kent vs Akron on the 3rd of November.
