Taking a bit of an artistic queue from a new comic book I got from #bobsbullpen The comic (Hillbilly) has some absolutely gorgeous work by Eric Powell that really nails that rustic, gritty style I love about old folk-stories whilst also staying crisp and easy to read. Berlinda’s pick: Joseph Cornell. Penny Arcade Portrait of Lauren Bacall. 1945-46.   

When Berlinda was a grad student at SAIC she used to visit the Cornell Boxes (in the Edwin and Lindy Bergman collection) at the Art Institute of Chicago, but she has loved Cornell ever since she read Dime Store Alchemy (responses to Cornell’s work by poet Charles Simic) when she was an undergrad at MICA.  The Tuesday Group discussed: how each intricate box could represent an event in the artist’s interior life, a proxy for actual experience/how the obsessive-compulsive collection of images and stories also formed new memories which manifested in the constructions and assemblages/how even loud, brash extroverts could find a love for Joseph Cornell’s quiet poetry.
