‘Tumamoc.’ Tumamoc Hill, in the heart of downtown Tucson, is our planet’s longest continuously active ecological research site by day. But at dawn and sunset it is open to hikers who find the climb keeps them fit and the view of the city below nourishes the soul. At the crest of Tumamoc is a small telescope observatory used by scientists from the University of Arizona ‘s Lunar and Planetary Laboratory to create the first map of the moon in the 1950s. It remains a wildlife refuge and home to a host of Desert fauna, including the iconic giant saguaro cactus.
