Tumblr Soundscape 2014

Listen to your world

I've had this idea for a while and it's time to do it: a tumblr soundscape composition. Please give this idea a moment so that my leap of faith doesn't end up like this guy: 

We live all over the world and if the internet has taught us anything it is that the world is mind-bogglingly more wonderful, diverse, beautiful and crazy than school ever prepared us for. This extends to the sounds around us as well. I'm willing to bet that every one of us hears something each day that no one else does, what Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer calls 'soundmarks' (like a landmark but with sound).

When you sit down to listen to music, you are trusting your ears and your mind to that music. As a composer, I consider my job to be a sort of 'curator of sounds.' I'm proposing an internet-enhanced feedback loop of a composition:

you listen to the soundscape around you

you identify at least one unique sound (whether this is an ambient nature sound, some man made sound you regularly encounter, or even your voice or a crowd, you decide, just keep it PG)

you record that sound using the best quality available to you

you message me for further instructions on how to submit the sound

I will compose a piece of music sampling the submitted sounds

I will share this with you all

the resulting music becomes part of the soundscape around you

Let's set a tentative deadline of Oct. 31st for submissions. Please reblog and share! All participants will receive the resulting track for free. For my previous work with soundscapes, please check out my album Karelian Soundscapes (which could only exist because of sampling the sound of Karelia, Russia).

This will be a piece of music that can only exist because of our tumblr community. Why not? Help me make it happen!
