Tunisian Vocabulary For Beginners

Part I : Basics

Days of the week : ليّامات {Layyemet}

The week : اجُمعة {eJom3a}

A day : نهار {n'har}

Today: لْيُوم/ ليومة {Lyoum/a}

Yesterday: لْبارح/ آمس {Lbera7/ Emes}

P.s. The names of the month are borrowed directly from the French language, with an adaptation at the level of the accent / pronunciation of some sounds. In some cases, we even keep the same phonological phenomena such as the nasalization in the case of June ( 🇫🇷Juin) : (🇹🇳Jwãn)..

The seasons: لفصول {L'fusool}

The names of the seasons are the same as in the Arabic language, with a small change in the stress and the accent:

Winter: شْتَا {'shta}

Spring: رْبيع {'rbee3}

Summer: صيف {seef}

Autumn/ Fall: خْريف {'khreef}

As you can see, not all words are the same as in Arabic. As a matter of fact, the French influence is highlighted in several words like batima ( batiment ) and bortmen ( appartement ), wteel ( hôtel ), jarda ( jardin ), marchi (le marchet), etc. Whereas, other words are borrowed from French without making any chances (lycée, fac, bibliothèque, pharmacie, la gare, restaurant, clinique, station, boutique, etc). The word banka is Italian (la banca).

This mixture is what makes the Tunisian language so special and beautiful 🇹🇳❤

احنا نتمناولهم الخير، و نحبوهم يكونو خير منّا آما ربي هبطهم عالأرض أحرار و لازمنا نحترمو اختياراتهم سواء طلعو طبّة و الاّ موزيكجيّة و الاّ طباخين و الاّ يصطادو الفرططوات في الجبولات.

N'harek assâad layyem ( have the happiest of days )

Ysabb'hek yrabb'hek ( it's a beautiful prayer that the elderly say meaning may your day be fruitful, may you win )

Âs'slema ( Hello ) {This is the most famous Tunisian word worldwide, it's our linguistic trademark} also known as "عَ سلامة", Arab Icon Majida Al Rumi has a song named after it : ع سلامة ع سلامة ، يا تونس ع سلامة - we also write it attached "عسلامة" and that's okay.
