Growing as an artist

As I get older I look at artist I like and instead of idolizing them for having this unattainable skill I could only dream of, I see there work as a jumping off point for myself to improve or even something I could probably emulate pretty well. It is a nice feeling to feel like you can probably do it.

Hey Adri! I am trying to do commissions and stuff for people ,but I super don't know I should be over email. What mix of business and relaxed should I be. Like I don't want to seem like a robot, but I don't want to seem like an amateur. How do you usually go about it?

I usually correspond with potential commissioners the same way I would if I were speaking to a customer at my job; not super impersonal but obviously not the same way I would approach a friend

Just be polite, concise, and don’t be afraid to ask questions, so long as they’re not really invasive. I try to avoid asking questions like, “How much are you willing to pay me?” and instead ask something along the lines of “What is your budget?” Working around a ballpark figure works out better than just putting the onus onto your customer to make a snap estimate.

If something is unclear or too vague, ask for clarification. The more clear the communication is between you and your customer, the smoother the process will go.
