Kármán vortex street
In fluid dynamics, the Kármán vortex street is a phenomenon consisting in the formation (with a certain constant frequency) of vortices caused by the interaction between a fluid and a cylinder-shaped object.
Within a certain range of Reynolds numbers (which measures the ratio of inertial to viscous forces in the flow of a fluid and is proportional to the speed of the flow) the boundary layer, formed when the flow hits the cylinder-shaped object, in the "rear" part of the cylinder is subject to an increased pressure which tends to shed the boundary layer from the object wall and to locally reverse the flow causing vortices.
The particularities of the Kármán vortex street are that the vortices are still in a laminar flow regime and that the shedding frequency is a constant: this characteristic can be used to measure the flow rate of a fluid, but the vortices also cause an oscillating mechanical stress on the cylinder-shaped object which can lead to structural problems.
