Armistead (2016), an editor for Engineering News Network, a highly-respected trade magazine for construction, architect, and engineering professionals, in “Canal Leaks Threaten Miami Water,” relays that Judge Bram D.E. Canter’s order states, “Cooling water for four units at Turkey Point, including two nuclear units, has seeped into the Biscayne Aquifer and spread in a lens of hypersaline groundwater that now extends four miles west of the power plant’s property” (p. 9). If the plant is as secure as FPL claims, then cooling water would not be seeping into Biscayne Bay. To a large extent, FPL trivializes the fact that Turkey Point is polluting Miami-Dade County residents’ water supply, electing to deny rather than fix the leak. FPL cares more about being perceived as environmentally considerate than actually being environmentally considerate. End of Part 3. Frequently, the safety of residents of color are treated as less important than business profits. Dr. Revathi I. Hines (2016), political science professor at Southern University and A&M College, an hxtorically black college in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, cites a study by John McQuaid that found black residents in Louisiana are 'twenty percent more likely to live within four miles of an industrial site that releases toxins, forty-one percent more likely to live within two miles, and fifty percent more likely than [whites] to live within one mile of a polluting facility' (p. 198). Exemplifying the environmental racism Dr. Hines described, Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) built the Turkey Point Nuclear Generating Station in Homestead, a city highly populated by residents of color. Although FPL proponents claim Turkey Point employs safe practices, considering there is evidence of Turkey Point leaking radioactive waste, Turkey Point negatively impacts the health of Miami-Dade County residents, disproportionately harming Homestead’s residents of color and marginalized ethnicities."
