This mix is inspired by OUTLAW ARTS gallery exhibition Calculated Risk. OUTLAW ARTS is a gallery in the heart of NYC’s Chinatown that celebrates art with an old school New York aesthetic rooted in downtown’s history of alternative exhibitions, events and outlaw parties. OUTLAW’s founder Rob Aloia created Calculated Risk as a curatorial challenge to bring together the work of thirteen somewhat disparate artists and formulate a cohesive group show inspired by the cultural mix of the downtown NYC that he came up through. Inspired by the idea of Calculated Risk and in the spirit of NYCs outlaw party past, veteran downtown DJ, Greg Poole, has created a mix that walks a tightrope of downtown’s underground with flirtations with early NY rap, Garage classics, Turkish disco, Ghanaian Hi-NRG and Scottish post-punk.
