TURNAWAYS’ recent release of Summer Love exemplifies the booming DIY punk scene. This album features 10 tracks lead by vocalist Justin White, whose voice fits in perfectly with the energetic drum beats and guitar riffs. Every track on the album is evocative of old school Ramones, early Green Day, and FIDLAR. This comes as no surprise when looking back at their older music, including songs like Gimmie Gimmie Adderall from A Taste of Texas, or Came Quick from the self-titled EP TURNAWAYS.

However, Summer Love is a more mature and refined sound from the band. White’s lyrics remain youthful and fun, focusing on things that young adults face regularly. The song 11 to 9, my personal favorite from the album, is a relatable track about the anxieties of being an ambitious young adult. This angst powered tune is matched by the other member’s lively playing, making it one of the best songs on the album. While 11 to 9 is definitely a memorable song, the most played song from Summer Love on Apple Music currently is Zombie Queen. This is the first song on the album that resembles a love song. Though White doesn’t get too emotional, the song puts a twist on a love at first-sight encounter and refers to a “she” as a Zombie Queen. Coming from TURNAWAYS, this is entirely expected as their lyrics continue to be playful. Zombie Queen is a track you can listen to when driving around, when you want to jam out, or just hang. Including these two songs, Summer Love is overall reminiscent of being a young idealist. Its an album you can play over and over again without getting sick, it only grows on you, proving that TURNAWAYS’ DIY self-produced album is incredibly well done.

Though TURNAWAYS recently ended their Summer Love tour, they’re ready to write more music and get back on the road. TURNAWAYS is Justin White, Dallas White, Saad Wadiwala, and Zeeshawn Wadiwala.
